Want a Manual Toyota? These 3 New Toyota GR Options Deliver
The manual transmission is in a fight within the automotive industry. It’s struggling to survive among the sea of automatics and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) that automakers produce in mass quantities. However, some cars keep offering a three-pedal setup for drivers who want to choose their gear. Check out Toyota’s GR options for manual-equipped cars, like the GR Corolla and the GR86
Does the Toyota GR Supra come with a manual transmission?
Fans of Toyota’s premier sports car can rejoice; the GR Supra will feature a six-speed manual transmission for the 2023 model year. However, there is a catch. The manual will only be an option with the 3.0 trim. That’s good news for fans who want a driver’s car with power and pantomime but not so great for potential owners who want a cheaper 2.0.
Instead, operators who want to row their own gears will have to fork over around $53,595 for a Supra 3.0. Still, for that money, fans will get Toyota’s new Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) to smash track times.
Does the GR86 come in Manual?
If the Supra doesn’t do it for you or your budget doesn’t cover a Toyota GR Supra 3.0, the GR86 might be your ticket to driver’s car fun. The Toyota GR86, like its Subaru sibling, the BRZ, is a manual-equipped sports coupe with a rear-wheel drive (RWD) platform. However, unlike the Supra 3.0’s 382-horsepower turbocharged inline-six, the GR86 packs a 228-horsepower flat four-cylinder mill.
While that might not sound like much, the GR86 is more about driving experience than raw speed. The lightweight, RWD, naturally aspirated, manual sports coupe is an accessibly priced driver’s car. In fact, TrueCar says the diminutive manual Toyota model starts at $28,995, quite a bit cheaper than the Supra.
Will the new Toyota GR Corolla Hatchback have a three-pedal option?
Toyota’s upcoming GR Corolla has super hot hatches like the Volkswagen Golf R in its sights. First and foremost, the wild little Toyota hatchback packs a manual transmission. Not only is the six-speed standard, but it’s also the only option available; the GR Corolla is a proper hot hatch. Moreover, the upcoming Toyota model features all-wheel drive (AWD) with selectable bias from a 60/40 split for daily operation to 30/70 for sliding around corners.
Finally, the GR Corolla packs a 300-horsepower three-cylinder engine derived from the international GR Yaris. The new Corolla hatch will be a handful and might give competition like the 2023 Honda Civic Type R a run for its money.
Which new manual Toyota should you choose?
Depending on your budget, any of these Gazoo Racing lunatics would be a great manual Toyota option. However, the GR Supra 3.0 is much more expensive than the GR Corolla or the GR86. Moreover, if on-paper bragging rights don’t matter to you, the GR86 is an excellent prospect. The Toyota GR86 is a fun, manual-equipped car with a traditional RWD layout and updated styling.
