Want a Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer with V8 Power? You Better Get It Now
If the perfect SUV for you is a V8-powered Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer, you better hurry to your nearest Jeep dealer. That’s because, after 2023, you won’t be able to feel that V8 growl anymore. Jeep is going all-in on the 3.0-liter Hurricane inline six for both Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
Depending on how you look at it, this may not be a big deal. For 2023, you can choose a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 in the Wagoneer, with 392 hp and 404 lb-ft of torque. For the Grand Wagoneer, there is the 6.4-liter Hemi with 470 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque.
How do the Hurricane Six engines compare to V8s?
Now, compare those two power numbers with the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Hurricane Six. The base version comes with 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. That fits squarely in between the 5.7 and 6.4 V8s. Moving up to the high output Hurricane, it packs 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That’s 40 hp over the 6.4 for those who are bad at math.
With the Hurricane, there is also a slight savings for fuel economy, though we think Stellantis can do better. Still, the inline-six offers 14 mpg City, 20 mpg Highway, and 17 mpg combined. In the 2023 V8-powered Grand Wagoneer, the rating is 13 mpg City, 18 mpg Highway, and 15 mpg overall.
Has Jeep confirmed the V8 is dead?
Car and Driver got a sneak peek at a fleet order guide, which spells out the 2024 engine availability. Jeep isn’t saying right now, though we’re very close to 2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer availability, so it’s time.
If having a motor rather than an engine in your Wagoneer appeals to you, then the Wagoneer S EV might be for you. It will be the premium Wagoneer for 2024. It beats both Hurricane six engines with 600 hp and a range of between 375 and 400 miles. And zero to 60 times of 3.5 seconds.
Are Jeep Wagoneer EVs replacing gas engines?
Though not the same as the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with 707 hp, it is still an incredible amount of power. The dual-motor STLA Large EV platform is debuting on the Wagoneer. The same platform will underpin the Jeep Recon SUV, which will be an EV with Wrangler size and performance.
So, while a lot about Jeep models remains the same year in and year out, it will now go through some major changes as it launches into the EV era. Though we don’t expect gasoline engines in Jeep products to go away anytime soon, Jeep has said it plans on bringing out a long line of electrified models starting next year.
