Thanks to the global chip shortage, those in the automotive industry aren’t slightly surprised to find out another model is low on production. Now, the Ram Power Wagon monster off-road pickup truck is a model everyone seems to want. However, Ram can’t make enough of them. That’s why the Ram Power Wagon heavy-duty truck’s demand is high, but supply is low.

Ram Power Wagon demand is high, but supply is low

If you’ve been paying attention to pickup truck news lately, you’ve probably only noticed talk of EVs. Ford, Chevy, and Ram all have electric trucks in the works, but the people still want their gas-powered off-roaders. That’s been proven true on multiple occasions, but most recently with the Ram Power Wagon.

Speaking to Muscle Cars and Trucks, Adrian Ratza, Ram Heavy Duty brand manager, said the company can’t keep up with demand due to supply chain issues. Not that Ram is complaining. Despite the frustration of being unable to make enough Power Wagons, the automaker is ecstatic to be selling so many trucks.

Factors other than the chip shortage are to blame

Surprisingly, according to The Drive, the chip shortage isn’t wholly to blame for the lack of Ram Power Wagon models. The pickup truck has components built by outside suppliers, such as the integrated winch and special shock absorbers. As you might expect, vehicles won’t roll off the production line without all the parts. All Ram heavy-duty trucks come from the same plant in Saltillo, Mexico.

Although Ram Power Wagon sales only make up about five percent of its total sales, the automaker is very happy with its numbers. “We’re seeing Power Wagon sales everywhere, cross country. I can’t say that most sales are located in one geographical area…our sales from New England to out west and down into Texas, we’re seeing Power Wagon sales everywhere. It has that appeal as an icon,” Ratza said regarding the diverse number of regions purchasing the trucks.

What is a Ram Power Wagon pickup truck?

If you don’t know, the Ram Power Wagon is the off-road-focused Ram 2500. It’s the heavy-duty variant of the Ram 1500 and comes with plenty of off-road features to boot. Some of them include a lifted suspension, a 12,000-pound bumper-integrated winch, front and rear locking differentials, a disconnecting sway bar, skid plates, and a 410-horsepower V8 engine.

The Ram 2500 Power Wagon starts at $57,490. That’s roughly $20,000 more than the base Ram 2500 Tradesman. Unlike the several lower trims, the Power Wagon is only available with a Crew Cab, 6’4″ box, and 4×4. According to Ram, it can tow up to 17,540 pounds when properly equipped. In addition, there are tons of packages to get more technology and luxury in every Ram pickup. Like the Power Wagon Level 3 Equipment Group for $9,745 that adds a remote start, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and so much more.

If you’re in the market for a new heavy-duty pickup truck, the Ram Power Wagon is an excellent option. However, you might have some trouble finding an available model. Thanks to supply chain issues and high demand, there’s a low supply of these pickup trucks right now. Keep an eye on local dealer inventory; you never know when you might get lucky.
