Watch: 2021 SRT Wide Body Hellcat Redeye Doing Donuts Crashes
Watching an $80,000 Dodge Hellcat Redeye Wide Body get munched doing donuts is cringeworthy. Especially when it is brand new. But hey, that’s what we’re here for-cringeworthy car-crazy crashes! This YouTube video was just posted last week. Now you can see what it’s like to smack a new Hellcat Redeye into a wall
SRT Bree is an Atlanta, Georgia, music video producer who was in the middle of a shoot that included this brand new 2021 Hellcat Redeye. The dopey driver of the Dodge Charger went off script and went for some impromptu donuts during some downtime. Bree placed her smartphone’s gaze on the smoke and swirl.
“I caught it on camera but I’m not quite sure how he did this”
Unfortunately, as the Charger goes just out of camera range you hear the familiar crunch of plastic and metal. Then Bree says, “I caught it on camera but I’m not quite sure how he did this.” How it happened was that the left rear tire blew out. The driver lost control and smacked a wall.
Damage to the Hellcat Charger was surprisingly extensive. Besides tipping off the left rear flare and tearing up the body on the driver’s side you can see the rear axle pushed out. The gas flap is also a victim and the rear valance is just hanging on. We expect that the Charger hit hard enough to cause frame damage. The lower valance is also barely hanging on.
These Hellcats can pump out almost 800 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque with their 6.2-liter supercharged V8. An eight-speed automatic transmission directs all of that power to the rear wheels. Quarter-mile elapsed times are in the mid-10s. So even without the tire blowing the Charger can easily get ahead of the driver. And when that happens so do bad things. Hellcats in crashes must be pretty common.
Like they say, “It ain’t gonna be cheap”
Bree is very familiar with Hellcats because she owns one. She almost had a meltdown with hers while doing donuts. While it’s tempting to hoon out with a Hellcat the resulting crashes can be both costly and deeply embarrassing. We wouldn’t want to venture a guess as to how much this will cost to fix but like they say, “It ain’t gonna be cheap.”
Even the best of drivers have little recourse once a rear tire blows doing a burnout. Doing donuts just makes it even more likely. Tires heat up and then start to expand. That can quickly lead to what you’re seeing here. When something out of your control takes over, all you can do is hang on.
