The competition for the electric pickup truck segment looks to be quite heated. This is especially the case after the recent launch of the Ford F-150 Lightning. However, in what is likely intentional timing, Chevrolet released an intense video showing off the capabilities and details of the Silverado EV — only days after the F-150 Lightning launch. The video is the most that Chevrolet has shared about the Silverado EV since its debut in January.

Chevy Silverado EV features the Ultium platform and battery pack

The video uses pulsating electronic music for dramatic effect as it covers the various capabilities and features of the Chevrolet Silverado EV. It starts with the tagline, “Built from the ground up to change the world.” Underscoring this is the Ultium platform and battery pack. GM will utilize the Ultium platform in many of its electric vehicles. This includes the GMC Hummer EV and likely the Corvette EV.

The video then illustrates how the new architecture for the Silverado EV integrates the Ultium battery pack. The Ultium battery pack enables the Silverado EV to get an estimated driving range of up to 400 miles per charge. This driving range is higher than the Silverado’s electric pickup truck competitors, including the F-150 Lightning (up to 320 miles). 

Additionally, with the visual aid of a wind tunnel, the video highlights how the Silverado EV’s reimagined exterior was optimized for aerodynamic performance. Its aerodynamic design is also a contributing factor for the relatively high range.

Four-wheel steering system in the Chevy Silverado EV for greater maneuverability

The video then illustrates the four-wheel steering system in the Chevy Silverado EV. The four-wheel steering system enables the Silverado EV to provide a tighter turning circle of 42.16 feet. In comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a turning circle of 47.8 feet. A shorter turning circle results in greater maneuverability. It also makes it easier to park a truck.

Chevy Silverado EV: Towing and payload capacities

The next things that the video highlights are the towing and payload capacities of the Chevy Silverado EV. It can tow up to 10,000 pounds and has a maximum payload capacity of 1,300 pounds. In comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a lower towing capacity (7,700 pounds) but tops the Silverado EV for payload (2,079 pounds).

Chevy Silverado EV: Utility and versatility

The latter part of the video is devoted to the utility and versatility of the Chevy Silverado EV. Its multi-flex midgate enables you to store items with a length of over nine feet — and over 10 feet when combined with the multi-flex midgate. Additional storage capabilities come courtesy of the 40/60 split-row rear seats, which provide four different configurations.

Also, the Silverado EV has an eTrunk “frunk,” a lockable, weatherproof storage area under the hood. Like many electric vehicles, including the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Silverado EV can offer a front trunk since the absence of a gas-engine powertrain frees up a great deal of space. 

Further expanding on the versatility of the Silverado EV, the video highlights the ability to customize it with accessories to meet your unique needs. This includes a camper shell, a ladder, and various tools. And to help power your tools, the Silverado EV has 10 available outlets with 10.2 kW of power. 

Will the Chevy Silverado EV video change the minds of Ford F-150 Lightning buyers?

The video closes with dramatic shots of the Silverado EV driving in various natural areas, including a coastal road, by a forest, and on a winding road through the mountains. To hammer home the emphasis on the Ultium platform and battery pack, the final shot of the video has the words, “All-electric Silverado — Unleash the power of Ultium.”

Will the Chevy Silverado EV video sway electric pickup truck buyers that were set on the Ford F-150 Lightning? We’ll have to wait and see.
