The Ferrari 308 GTS is a stunning two-seater targa top built from 1977 to 1980. Its 255-horsepower V8 tops out at 152 mph. According to Ferrari, while only 3,219 were released, this was still 50% more units than the 308 GTB during the same period. Since the sports car’s total height was only 44 inches, a 6’ 2” country music star had to do some real acrobatics to load in. Let’s watch Johnny Cash demonstrate.

In the decades-old clip, Johnny Cash stands outside the red Ferarri 308. Jokingly, he claims, “It’s easy to get in and out of.” Cash swings open the driver’s door and promptly sits right on the ground. He scooches forward and lifts his legs into the cabin, using his arms to push himself onto the left front seat.

To exit, he explains with his legendary drawl, “This is backwards from getting in.” Cash flips over and dives his torso to the road. He crawls out the rest of the way on his hands and knees. “Isn’t that great?” he asks the camera.

Some fans speculate that he’s mocking the Ferrari’s impractically low height since he was always more of a Cadillac guy. At over six feet tall, I don’t much blame him. We’ll leave you with a great live performance of “Walk the Line” from The Johnny Cash Show, which ran for 58 episodes from 1969 to 1971.
