The idea of carpool karaoke, carpool vocal coaching, and even just carpooling are some of the ways people pass the time in the car. One aspiring singer named Rynia Kando decided to get in the mix by doing some Olivia Rodrigo vocal coaching in Cheryl Porter’s famous vehicle. But don’t try this at home, kids. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) doesn’t want people driving around in cars doing vocal coaching.

What’s not to love about Olivia Rodrigo songs and carpool vocal coaching?

If you haven’t heard of Olivia Rodrigo before, you might just not know it yet. This year, Rodrigo has been all over the place with her hit single “drivers license”(she spells it this way). The song drivers license is, you guessed it, about getting your driver’s license as a bright and shiny 16-year-old. However, this one is a breakup song that everyone seems to relate to. The drivers license lyrics are good; there’s no denying that.

It makes sense Rodrigo would be into carpool vocal coaching given the theme of the song. Cheryl Porter picks Kando up, and off the vocally-inspired pair goes. Porter seems to have a two or three-row SUV filled with coats, baby toys, and other personal items. Based on the release date of February, it looks pretty snowy outside of the car. But Porter is a professional. Besides looking lost at one point, she continues to drive around while Kando practices the Olivia Rodrigo song.

Can anyone out there multi-task like Porter? Not only is she driving, navigating, and coaching, but she has many cameras in her face at the same time. The NHTSA would like a word now.

Does Olivia Rodrigo have her license?

James Corden sort of made car activities popular with his own Carpool Karaoke YouTube series. However, he’s got nothing on Porter. While the setup on Corden’s show is made-for-TV and glamorous (as much as carpool karaoke can be), something about just being in Porter’s personal SUV is better.

Rodrigo sings a lot about cars and car-related activities in her song because getting your license is one of those coming-of-age things that’s a big deal. Perhaps that’s why her album has shot to the top of the pop charts and stayed there.

While Olivia Rodrigo is singing through the speakers and Kando is in the passenger seat, Porter is paying close attention to the road. It looks like she is actually driving, but there’s always a chance her car is being towed for safety purposes. No distracted driving here. But the NHTSA has a lot to say about distracted driving. In 2019 alone, distracted driving led to the deaths of 3,142 lives. How exactly is that defined?

“Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system.”

So don’t hop on the road and start trying to coach your friends and family while driving. Paying attention to the road and your surroundings is more important than hitting high notes. That doesn’t mean you can’t sing your heart out, but try not to start a full-fledged YouTube channel from the driver’s seat right away. Driving alone down someone’s street is probably better until you get the hang of it.
