Depending on the circumstances, parallel parking can be daunting. Fear the task no longer: a helpful YouTube video has been assisting drivers looking to pass their licensing exam since 2016. The step-by-step parallel park tutorial is embedded below, and you’re almost guaranteed to learn something new.

My first “refresher” was remembering to leave three feet between your car and the vehicle you pull up next to. That was about a minute into the nine-minute lesson.

Here’s how to parallel park, according to a tenured driving instructor

  1. Find a Spot: Ensure the parking space is at least 1.5 times your car’s length.
  2. Signal: Turn on your indicator to alert other drivers of your intention to park.
  3. Position: Align your car parallel to the car in front of the space, about 3 feet away.
  4. Reverse: Put your car in reverse and start backing up slowly.
  5. Steer: When your back bumper is aligned with the rear bumper of the car next to the space, turn the steering wheel sharply toward the curb.
  6. Adjust: Continue reversing until your car is at a 45-degree angle to the curb.
  7. Straighten: Straighten the wheel and continue reversing until your front bumper clears the rear bumper of the car in front.
  8. Turn: Turn the steering wheel sharply away from the curb and back into the space.
  9. Align: Adjust your position by moving forward or backward as needed to center your car in the space.
  10. Finish: Ensure your wheels are straight and your car is parallel to the curb, ideally 6-12 inches from it.

With practice, these steps will help you exclaim, “Like a glove!” with earned confidence in no time.
