The Tesla Model Y and Nissan Frontier rub bumpers
Did you know that the 2020 Tesla Model Y has a dashcam? It’s actually so popular to watch Tesla footage that there are Tesla Cam Stories. In a recent episode of Wham Baam Teslacam’s stories, one of the clips shows a Nissan Frontier swerving into a Model Y before it’s sent flying.
The camera footage was actually able to determine that the Frontier was at fault for the wreck. Until then, it looked like the Model Y was at fault. But the driver didn’t even fully understand what happened until the footage was reviewed.
What happened with the Model Y?
A man named Taylor was driving his four week old Tesla Model Y on I-35 in Hickory Creek, Texas, when he passed a black Nissan Frontier that seemed to be speeding up. So, Taylor decided to change lanes, allowing faster traffic to pass him.
However, during that time, the Frontier sped around another car in the right lane and sideswiped the Tesla. Luckily for Taylor, the Model Y held its own. However, the Nissan Frontier was sent flying out of control and hit a concrete barrier.
The event happened so quickly that there was no time to evade the wreck or be alerted. This is shocking because Taylor was driving with autopilot traffic-aware cruise control engaged. The Frontier was in his blindspot before man or machine knew it.
According to the video, the Nissan driver claimed that he was simply driving along when Taylor suddenly spun him out and into the wall. But, Taylor noted that he didn’t speak to the Frontier driver. He was too shaken up after the event and sat until the police arrived to provide the cam footage.
The police determined that the Nissan driver was 100 percent at fault. He was busted for driving aggressively with unsafe lane changes at high speeds.
As far as we know, both drivers are OK, but their rides are hurt. We aren’t sure about how the Nissan Frontier is currently doing. However, the Tesla Model Y is currently being repaired with a cost estimate of about $4,000.
How safe is the Tesla Model Y?
It feels like the Tesla held its own during that wreck, and thank goodness the dashcam was there to prove what happened. But how safe is this EV? It hasn’t been tested by the IIHS or NHTSA yet.
But sources like Inside EVs suggest that it could be the safest SUV ever made. This information is based on how the Tesla Model 3 proved to be incredibly safe based on its architecture. It received incredibly low probabilities for injuries during standard crash testing.
Also, the Tesla Model Y has received two recalls. One for loose arm control bolts that may affect steering and another one for inoperative trailer brake lights. These issues could increase the risk of accidents, so we’re glad they were brought to light.
