A nifty new feature for EV drivers is coming to Waze. If you’re unfamiliar with this navigation app, it crowdsources info from drivers, allowing you to get notifications on everything from road hazards to car crashes. But now (or soon), Waze can route you to EV charging stations with plugs that work with your electric car.

Waze’s new EV charging station feature

If you use Google Maps or another navigation app, you might want to check out Waze. It does more than give real-time information about road conditions and the fastest, shortest, or cheapest route to your destination. You can also create friend groups and keep tabs on one another while traveling — ideal for shared vacations. Waze integrates well with Facebook, Google Calendar, and other apps. And it can give you a heads-up on police speed traps — not that you’d ever drive over the speed limit.

By some accounts, Waze is better than other similar apps at providing the quickest route from point a to point b. It arguably has more engaging graphics too. And though all the major navigation apps show you gas stations along the way, Waze recently added an EV charging station feature to its route-planning tool.

According to Waze, the app can now lead you to the nearest charging station compatible with your EV.

How do you find EV charging stations using Waze?

Although Waze has some bugs to fix in the new feature, it’s working quite well for many users. Input your EV model and plug type into the app, and it will identify the charging stations along your route that you can use.

However, according to Electrek, Waze still routes some users to gas stations. The company’s recent announcement that the feature is available does not apply to all U.S. regions yet. As of March 15, the update applied to several countries in Europe and South America, Singapore, and Mexico. Waze expects all U.S. users to have access to the feature by mid-April.

You’ll have to navigate to “Settings” and “Vehicle details” in the app to enable it. Then, under “Vehicle Type,” change your vehicle to “Electric.” Presumably, you’ll also see an option to enter the type of plug you use to charge your EV. Once you’ve made those updates, Waze should show you EV charging stations compatible with your vehicle.

Other apps can help you find charging stations

Waze isn’t the only game in town. However, look closely at each app’s offerings — some might not suit your needs.

According to Sixt, EVHotels is an iOS-only app specializing in finding EVs near hotels (and helps you book rooms). It costs $2.99 and might be too limited in scope for many drivers.

EVmatch helps you find, reserve, and pay for charging stations on the app. It’s available for iOS and Android. But you won’t get the road-trip facility of a Waze.

ChargePoint is the largest charging station brand. And the company has an app that can help you locate one of its charging stations (only).

EVgo specializes in fast-charging stations rather than navigation or all public charging stations. Like Waze, it’s free to use. But if you’re traveling to a new place, you’ll probably want a navigation app with built-in EV location services.

Not only is it far better than automakers’ built-in navigation systems, but Google Maps is also a fierce competitor to Waze. It allows users to search for EV charging stations in real-time.

PlugShare is another app, and though it lacks the name recognition of Waze and Google Maps, it claims to have the most comprehensive listing of EV charging stations in the world.

Many of the above apps are good options. But if you don’t already have a preference, Waze’s new update might be worth waiting for.
