The TRD Off-Road package prepares the 2022 Tundra to take on the trails
Every single 2022 Tundra with the TRD Off-Road package is more ready for off-road adventure than its base-model counterparts. Even a 2WD Tundra with the Off-Road package gets all-terrain tires wrapped around alloy TRD rims. For the Tundra SR5, these rims are 18-inches. For the Tundra Limited they are 20-inches.
In addition, every 2WD and 4WD Tundra with the TRD Off-Road package wears skidplates and mudflaps to protect the vehicle’s underside. Finally, Toyota upgrades every TRD Off-Road equipped truck with a high-clearance off-road-ready suspension and Bilstein shocks.
That said, the TRD Off-Road package is at least a $1,440 option on the 2WD Tundra SR5. Upgrading the Tundra SR5 to 4WD only costs $950. Therefore, we don’t expect to see many 2WD TRD Off-Road Tundras around.
The 4WD 2022 Tundra boasts a part-time transfer case and a limited-slip differential. If you upgrade with both the 4WD and TRD Off-Road Package, Toyota adds several more performance features. One upgrade is the electronically locking rear differential. The other major feature is Toyota’s proprietary off-road driver aids: Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control (CRAWL), and Downhill Assist Control (DAC).
2022 Tundras with the TRD Off-Road package are distinct
The TRD Off-Road package upgrades the 2022 Tundra with several visual upgrades. Trucks with this package will be hard to miss: Toyota is decking them out with a TRD grille and “TRD OFF-ROAD” bedside decal.
Toyota will also upgrade the interiors of all TRD Off-Road Tundras. Interior features include aluminum sport pedals, a TRD engine start/stop buttion, a leather-wrapped shift lever, and a heated leather steering wheel.
If you spring for the TRD Off-Road “Premium” package, Toyota will even throw in top-trim seats. these upgraded seats are trimmed in SofTex and boast 8-way power-adjustment as well as 2-way power lumbar. This trim level also features dual-zone automatic climate control and color-keyed outer door handles.
The third-generation Toyota Tundra will be an off-road beast
Compared to the upcoming Tundra TRD Pro, the TRD Off-Road package is a relativeily inexpensive way to upgrade the 2022 Tundra. Every TRD Off-Road-equipped Tundra wears distinctive badges, trim, and rims. In addition, all TRD Off-Road Tundras benefit from taller, more capable upgraded suspension, aggressive tires, and skidplates.
That said, 4WD is a cheaper option than the TRD Off-Road package and will likely do more to improve a Tundra’s off-road performance. Tundra’s already equipped with 4WD, then upgraded with the TRD Off-Road package, enjoy a locking differential and suite of off-road driver aid software.
