Here’s What Could Power the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek
The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is coming, and it marks a new generation of this compact SUV. While visually, it does not look too different from the outgoing model; there will be some changes, including a boost in power. So what could power the next-gen Subaru Crosstrek?

While other parts of the world have already gotten the new Crosstrek SUV, we’re still rocking the old generation here in the States. But at the Chicago Auto Show, that is going to change. Subaru will be debuting the 2024 Crosstrek for us Yanks.
It will be getting more power, some new tech, and should be a safer SUV overall. And because the Crosstrek is already so popular, you can be sure folks will be interested in what Subaru has changed.
What engine will the 2024 Crosstrek have?
Subaru will likely use the 2.5-liter engine that is currently an option in this SUV. It makes 182 horsepower, but it is entirely possible that it could see a power boost as well as some improved efficiency. The base engine will likely remain the 2.0-liter BOXER engine that generates 152 hp.
A big complaint about the old Crosstrek was that it was underpowered. When Subaru added that more potent 2.5-liter engine, the Crosstrek actually had its best-selling year in 2022. So, you have to think that the brand would at least consider giving its small SUV more power. Even if it is just a slight boost.
According to Car and Driver, the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek does get a different powertrain in Japan. It is something the Subaru is calling the e-Boxer powertrain. But it seems unlikely that this hybrid powertrain will find its way to the States.
Subaru’s small SUV could be powered by the WRX
Now, I’ll be honest; this probably isn’t going to happen. But it would definitely be cool if it did. The FA24 2.4-liter turbocharged engine is the powerplant that is found in the Subaru Outback and Subaru WRX. If Subaru wanted to make the Crosstrek actually powerful, it could put a detuned version of this engine under the hood.
That would mean the Crosstrek could benefit from more than 200 hp. Unfortunately, as fun as a powerful small SUV from Subaru would be, I do not really see the folks at corporate considering or approving that move. It could potentially lead to the cannibalization of Outback sales. And automotive manufacturers don’t tend to like to steal sales from themselves.
For some, the 2024 Crosstrek might have one disappointing fact. It might mark the end of this small SUV’s ability to come with a manual transmission. In Japan, that option has been dropped, and it’s not like folks are lining up to purchase a new SUV with a standard transmission.
Still, that’s not the end of the world. And if the U.S.-spec version of the Crosstrek does wind up getting more power, I think the trade-off does make sense.
