One of the most underrated three-row SUV models is the Volkswagen Atlas. This spacious seven-seater provides plenty of bang for your buck with its surprisingly affordable price and upscale interior. In addition, it has more than one powerful engine option, including the standard version. Like every vehicle, it’s undergoing a few changes heading into 2023. What will be different with the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas? Is it worth waiting for it over the 2022 Atlas?

According to Car and Driver, the three-row SUV gets very few changes for the new model year. First, the automaker dropped the base model S from the lineup altogether. It didn’t receive a replacement, so the Atlas SE is now the base model. In the five-trim lineup, the SE starts at $35,895, with top-of-the-line models reaching as high as $53,000. All versions of the Atlas are spaced out in price, which usually means each is a significant upgrade over the next.

Next, all trims above the SE base model now have a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster as standard equipment. Previously, it was an available option for a little extra cash. Besides those minor changes, the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas remains the same as the 2022 model year. Fortunately, that means there was also very little change in price, but not much is different.

What are the Atlas trim levels?

Since the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas lineup is reduced to five trims, you’ll want a rundown on prices and equipment. Starting with the $35,895 SE base model, buyers get a surprising amount of standard equipment. For example, a power liftgate, heated front seats, proximity keyless entry/ignition, simulated leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and more.

Next, for $40,065, the SE with Technology trim adds things like remote start, a hands-free liftgate, voice controls, and a wireless charging pad. Optionally, this model can be outfitted with all-wheel drive, a panoramic sunroof, second-row captain’s chairs, and a towing package with 5,000 pounds of capacity.

Building off the previous model, the Atlas SEL gets standard all-wheel drive and a panoramic sunroof. In addition, models with the V6 engine get the Towing Package as standard equipment. Moreover, SEL buyers gain a heated steering wheel, navigation, blind-spot intervention, and more for $45,685.

Finally, the last three trim levels add primarily cosmetic upgrades. Both the SEL R-Line and SEL R-Line Black add sporty bumpers, gray or black wheels, a black grille, etc. However, the SEL Premium R-Line adds more functional value. Things like heated second-row seats, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Fender premium audio system, automated parking, and much more for $53,085.

Is it worth waiting for the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas?

In conclusion, if you’re interested in a new Volkswagen Atlas, there’s no reason to wait. The 2022 Atlas is virtually the same as the new 2023 version of the Volkswagen three-row SUV as there are almost no changes. Without any significant changes and a slight price increase, it’s probably better to pull the trigger on a 2022 Atlas before they’re all gone. Furthermore, we think the one to buy is the SE with Technology because it adds a lot of value without breaking the bank as much as higher trims.
