What Do the Toyota Tundra’s SR and SR5 Trim Levels Stand For?
You may already know that the Toyota Tundra’s base trims trucks are called the SR and SR5. You may even know it shares these names with the Tacoma. But did you know that these nameplates originally stood for “Sport Rally” and “Sport Rally 5-speed?” They actually predate the name Tundra–and they used to be the Toyota Truck’s top trim levels.
The Toyota Truck Sport Rally (SR) was the top of the line
Our story starts way back when, in the 1990s. Until 1995 Toyota didn’t even refer to its trucks by model names: the Toyota Truck was just called the Toyota Truck. But it did have trim levels.
The Toyota of the day was already banking on its off-road engineering and rally race wins to sell trucks. Therefore, it won’t surprise you that when Toyota introduced an upmarket trim of its pickup truck, it named this truck the “Sport Rally” or SR for short.
So what about the Toyota Tundra SR5? This was a trim level above the original Sport Rally.
My colleague Dan Mayfield reported that the SR5 trim came about when Toyota added a manual transmission with a whopping five gears. Luxury of luxuries! This transmission deserved its own trim level and the Sport Rally 5–or the SR5 was born.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra SR is very much a work truck. It’s actually the only trim of the Tundra that you can order with an eight-foot bed. But if you want a more powerful engine you’ll have to opt for the 2022 Toyota Tundra SR5.
