What does Hyundai’s “Ultra-Fast Charging” mean?

Hyundai’s Ultra-Fast Charging, generally referred to as direct current fast charging or DC fast charging (DCFC), allows the Ioniq lineup of EVs to use public charging stations capable of delivering up to 350 kilo-watts at 800 volts (350kW/800V). Compared to a Standard 240V AC Level 2 in-home charging station installed in a garage, the difference in charging times goes from several hours to under 20 minutes. 

How does Hyundai’s Ultra-Fast Charging promise diminish range anxiety?

Ultra-fast charging reassures people interested in driving an EV. It’s comforting to know that recharging at public charging stations is fast and convenient. 

First, let’s look at a typical day in the life of a Hyundai Ioniq driver. Most leave home at the beginning of their day and drive to work, drop the kids off at school, or run their daily errands. The average driver only covers 37 miles per day, according to Kelley Blue Book. Those who prefer to live outside the city still rarely drive more than 200 miles on an average day. 

Therefore the base Ioniq’s estimated 220-mile range negates the need for public DCFC charging stations. It also alleviates range anxiety under normal circumstances. On longer road trips, the DCFC charging station network provides opportunities to stay on the road with little downtime. 

Electrify America’s network of EV charging stations

Electrify America currently operates over 3,500 DC fast chargers and 116 Level 2 chargers at 806 charging stations nationwide. The company has plans for another 123 stations “coming soon.” Electrify America’s network provides charging stations at locations in every US metropolitan area and along interstate highway corridors.

The Electrify America mobile app quickly locates nearby public charging stations and those along your route. In addition, it provides information about the number and real-time availability of each charger type. If your preferred charger type is occupied, you can receive alerts when it becomes available. Other benefits of the mobile app include the following:

• Contactless payment. Pay from the app by tapping the charger or swiping your phone screen. 
• Charge progress tracking. Compatible EVs sync to the app, showing the state of charge (SOC), and send custom notifications. These phone notifications allow you to multitask while charging. 
• Charge history display. Your charge history lets you track your charging sessions at home and public charging stations.
