The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, which saw a full redesign just two years ago, is back. If you want a vehicle that’s a comfortable people-mover with lots of interior space, you’ll want to check it out. It has three rows of seats and more room in the back row that the rest of the class. It’s got some new features and a lot of great standard features.

What features are standard on the Chevy Traverse?

Power and Performance

The standard engine across all Chevy Traverse models is a 3.6-liter V6 engine that puts out 310 horsepower and has a lot of zip. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine was completely dropped for 2020. It’s front-wheel-drive only standard. The base model is the only model where you can’t get all-wheel-drive.

The V6 is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that allows you to change gears effortlessly. It has the power you need to get where you want to go each day.

Noise in the cabin is kept to a minimum. The overall vehicle feels smaller than it really is when you move quickly. It’s a nice balance of athletic and nimble. It handles well due to a suspension that also allows for comfort. Even on rougher roads, it’s a quality ride. Even crowded lots are easy to navigate in the Traverse.

The Traverse, when equipped properly, can actually tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Comfort, space, and technology

When it comes to tech, the Traverse has most of the standard features you’d expect. You have Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connectivity. You also get six USB ports and a WiFi hotspot. There’s an upgraded infotainment system with Chevrolet Infotainment 3. The graphics are sharper offering a better user interface that’s more like a smartphone display on the 7-inch touch screen. 

There’s a rearview camera and a tri-zone automatic climate control system onboard. You also get Chevrolet’s Teen Driver feature which is great for those with new drivers in the family. The teen driver system helps you instruct a new driver even when you aren’t present. You can set speed notifications, limit the volume of the vehicle’s audio system and more. The system also offers a report card so you can track the young driver’s performance.

With all the folding seats down, you can haul a lot of cargo in the Chevrolet Traverse. It has more space than the rest of the class. You can fit as many as six suitcases behind the third row of seats. It has cubby storage in the first-row area too. The base models have 18-inch wheels and cloth upholstery.

Safety and Warranty

While the Traverse hasn’t yet been tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, this generation received a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Transportation Administration. That’s the good news.

The bad news? Most of the great safety features the Traverse offers are only available with the higher trim levels. And that’s a shame because many of its peers offer such safety features standard now.

With Traverse, you need to get the LT trim just to get rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alerts, and blind-spot monitoring. With it, you can also get the Driver Confidence II package for $625 which adds forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision alerts, front pedestrian braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and a heated steering wheel.

The base model of the Chevrolet Traverse still a solid contender in its class in 2020. With its spacious, comfy cabin, smooth ride, and a pretty good fuel economy, it’s a solid choice for those looking for an everyday vehicle for work or family.
