Ford’s F-150 truck is considered by many to be one of the best trucks for your money. It has several different engine options, a spacious interior, and some technology in even the lowest-priced versions. When properly equipped, it can tow up to an incredible 12,100 pounds.

The Ford F-150 comes in seven different trims. The off-road-ready Raptor and the luxurious Limited are two of the most valuable trucks on the market. However, you don’t need the most expensive version to get the most out of this truck. But here are the standard features on the base XL trim.

Engine

The standard F-150 comes with a V6 3.3-liter engine capable of 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. On the 2020 model, Ford expanded the engine options for the XL. For an additional price, drivers can now have the same 5.0-liter V8 in the upscale Platinum version. This engine produces 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Two Ecoboost V6 engines are also available. Last year, the base engine was only available with a six-speed automatic transmission. In 2020 models, the ten-speed is now standard, which will give drivers the most accurate and smooth shifts.

Interior

The inside of the XL is simple, but efficient for a work truck. Cloth seats are standard, which are comfortable and decently supportive. The second row is also incredibly spacious, particularly in the SuperCrew configuration. Leather or vinyl seats are also available for an upcharge.

The technology inside the base trim is sparse. Its only screen is the small one inside the gauge cluster. However, drivers can download the FordPass app to get a Wi-Fi hotspot. If you want a proper infotainment center, you can buy the optional Sync 3 system. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen and features like dual-zone climate control and smartphone connectivity.

Cab options

The base version has the highest number of options when it comes to cab configurations. You can choose between the Regular cab, the SuperCab, or the SuperCrew. The regular cab can seat up to three passengers, but the middle seat feels restricted. If you have more passengers to seat, get a cab with a second row.

The XL also has three different bed lengths to choose from. If you have a Regular or SuperCab, your options are a 6-foot-6-inch bed or an extended 8-foot bed. The SuperCrew can have a shorter 5-foot-6-inch bed or the standard 6-foot option.

Towing power

Unless you have a more powerful engine, the base offering won’t be able to unlock the truck’s full towing capacity. Still, it’s suitable for most towing jobs, even lugging a boat or small trailer. With the 3.3-liter V6, you can tow up to 7,700 pounds. It also has a maximum payload of 1,190 pounds.

The XL also has options to make work tasks easier. Ford’s Boxlink system is available, which provides moveable tie-downs to better secure your cargo. A tailgate step can also be added, as well as trailer brake assist.

Safety

On the base F-150, both the driver and passengers have front and side airbags. Active safety features include automatic emergency brakes and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection. It also comes equipped with a backup camera.

This camera also has dynamic hitch assist for securing your trailer. Other features for safe towing include roll stability and curve control. The XL can also have a Trailer Tow package. This includes a tow connector, a Class IV hitch, a hookup lamp, and a reinforced stabilizer bar.  Even without all the extra trimmings, the XL is still a great work truck.
