Even if you’re not an avid off-roader, you’ve likely seen an ROV or two tearing up trails. However, if you’re unfamiliar with the acronym, you might not know what it is. Whether you call it an ROV, UTV, or a side-by-side (SxS), you’re likely referring to an off-road vehicle with unique capabilities.

An ROV, or recreational off-highway vehicle, is a capable, trail-crushing off-roader like the Polaris RZR and Can-Am Maverick

A recreational off-highway vehicle (ROV) is a term that typically refers to side-by-side (SxS) off-road cars and UTVs. According to the Recreational Off-highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA), an ROV is a “motorized off-road vehicle designed to travel on four or more non-highway tires, with a steering wheel, non-straddle seating, seat belts, an occupant protective structure.”

Unlike an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), a UTV more often than not features automotive-style controls like a steering wheel and control pedals. Conversely, ATVs more typically use handlebar controls like a motorcycle. Beyond automotive-style controls, an ROV requires the driver to be a minimum of 16 years of age and possess a driver’s license.

What’s more, a SxS like a Polaris RZR features a rollover protective structure (ROPS). Like a roll cage, the ROPS protects occupants in the event of a vehicle rollover event. ATVs, on the other hand, lack an upright protective structure. Operators sit on an ATV and ride it, whereas occupants get inside and drive an ROV.

However, even with a ROPS protecting occupants in the event of a rollover, driving a SxS can be dangerous. Understandably, most accidents involving a SxS are related to operator error. Every UTV driver should drive within their limits and avoid abrupt, jerky maneuvers.

Beyond performance models like the Polaris RZR Pro R, some UTVs focus on utility aspects. In those applications, you’ll likely find a bed and tailgate, not unlike a pickup truck. Still, just because UTVs have a utility application doesn’t mean they’re doomed to austerity. For instance, the latest RZR lineup offers heated and ventilated seats like you’d find in a luxury car.
