If you’ve seen the Chevy Silverado EV, you’ve wondered what its towing capacity might be. Compared to other electric pickup trucks, capability in things like towing can give a massive advantage. Many people are afraid that new electric models won’t perform like gas-powered ones. However, like the Ford F-150 Lightning before it, the Chevy Silverado EV is here to prove them wrong.

Chevy Silverado EV: towing capacity

According to The Drive, the Chevy Silverado EV is rated to tow 10,000 pounds in its RST form. That’s equal to the Ford F-150 Lightning and 1,000 pounds fewer than the Rivian R1T electric pickup truck. However, Chevrolet says it is working on a more capable Silverado EV variant that will stomp the entire segment. That’s not an exaggeration; Chevy says it will eventually have a Silverado EV capable of towing 20,000 pounds.

Although there are no more details about when or how it’s happening, an electric pickup truck with towing capacity that high would easily be the best option for towing. This tiny little detail snuck in during the many CES presentations this year flew under the radar. Fortunately, The Drive was able to catch the hint that the new Chevy electric truck will eventually tow double everyone else’s max weight.

Can the Chevy Silverado EV really tow 20,000 pounds?

In photos of the new model, you’ll see that the Silverado EV uses eight-lug wheels, like a three-quarter or one-ton truck. While that might’ve flown under the radar for many, it could be a hint at its future capability. Notably, The Drive pointed out that the Ford F-150 Lightning uses only six-lug rollers, and the Rivian R1T just five-lug.

“After initial launch, Chevrolet will introduce a fleet model with up to 20,000 pounds max trailering with the max tow package,” Chevy said in its press release about the electric pickup truck. We’re assured that a 20,000-pound towing capacity-capable truck will exist but as a fleet model. That means your average, everyday driver with a pickup truck won’t have that much towing capacity. However, those who use their truck for work can get a Chevrolet Silverado EV capable of towing double the weight of the standard model.

What else do we know about the electric Chevy Silverado?

Chevy’s electric pickup truck has 10.2 kilowatts of available energy supply and up to 780 pound-feet of torque. The design of the exterior looks nothing like previous Silverado iterations. It seems more like an electric truck of the future than your run-of-the-mill Chevy Silverado. There’s an estimated 400-mile driving range for the RST and Work Truck models with a full charge.

The Chevy Silverado EV has 664 horsepower with a 0 to 60 mph time of fewer than 4.5 seconds. Next, standard DC fast charging is available for the RST and Work Truck, up to 350 kW. Lastly, the maximum payload capacity is 1,300 pounds, which falls short of the F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.

For now, we’ll have to wait to see if more information comes about the various Silverado EV models. The automaker emphasizes its performance, and the 20,000-pound towing capacity of the future shows that well. However, with a price range from about $40,000 to $105,000, towing that much weight might cost a pretty penny.
