The Toyota Tacoma has long been the king of mid-size trucks. But, the current generation has been around since 2015. While that might not be as old as something like the Nissan Frontier was before it got a redesign, it is starting to show its age. So, what’s coming for the 2024 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck?

Will there be a fourth-generation Toyota Tacoma?

The Tacoma truck is currently in its third generation, but the fourth gen is coming. It is expected to be released for the 2024 model year, and it will likely borrow design language from the new Toyota Tundra. Although it will be a new mid-size truck, it will still be body-on-frame. Much like the Tundra, the Tacoma will ride on the TNGA-F architecture, which is a new platform from Toyota. 

Currently, the Tacoma does outsell other mid-size trucks. But, as brands like Ford, Nissan, and Chevy invest in these smaller pickups, Toyota had better make some legitimate improvements. The new platform will probably have a better rear suspension, which should improve how it handles on the road. 

What year is a 4th gen Toyota Tacoma?

The fourth-generation Tacoma is not here yet, but it is expected to arrive by the end of 2023 for the 2024 model year. Toyota recently gave its full-size pickup, the Tundra, a full redesign. So, it would make sense if the Tacoma follows that design language. Helping it fall in line with what this Japanese car company is doing. 

It wouldn’t be surprising if the 2024 Toyota Tacoma get a powertrain update. You can now get the Tundra as a hybrid truck, so Toyota might do the same for its mid-size pickup. 

One thing that some folks might be wondering is if the 2024 Tacoma will have a manual transmission. Save for the 2023 Jeep Gladiator, the Tacoma is the only other mid-size truck you can get with a standard transmission. 

Will the 2024 Tacoma be a hybrid?

It’s not clear if Toyota plans to release a hybrid mid-size truck, but according to Car and Driver, it is possible. This pickup is certainly due for some kind of new powertrain. And as the industry moves to electrification, more trucks are benefiting from hybrid technology. 

One thing that is likely will be the addition of a turbo-charged four-cylinder engine. The Lexus NX350 has a 2.4-liter engine that makes 275 horsepower and 317 pound-foot of torque. It would not be too much of a stretch to imagine Toyota adding that engine to this pickup truck. 

Is it worth it to wait for the new Tacoma?

The fourth-gen Toyota Tacoma probably won’t be arriving until late 2023. If you are dead set on purchasing a mid-size truck now, the 2023 Tacoma does have a lot to offer. At the same time, the next-gen Tacoma is sure to be a hit. Especially if the brand takes the proper steps to keep its pickup truck relevant.
