The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is the latest electric pickup truck to hit the market. Aside from some incredible performance figures, the top of the line Edition 1 model has a unique party trick. A “Watts to Freedom” mode allows the Hummer Ev to rocket to 60 mph in just three seconds. According to Road and Track, WTF mode preps the Hummer EVs batteries for maximum performance.

How much power does the Hummer EV have?

The first GMC Hummer EV to reach customers will be the Edition 1, which boasts a power output of about 1,000hp. Something to note here is that these performance figures are estimates. However, a massive manufacturer like GM would not publish unattainable performance figures.

The massive power output is possible thanks to three electric motors. Unlike a traditional internal combustion engine, electric motors cannot be supercharged or turbocharged, meaning to get more power, you need more motors.

GMC’s newest EV’s most important performance figure is not its horsepower. Aside from generating 1000 hp, the electric pickup truck manages to provide up 350 miles of range. As you’d imagine, this range is not possible when driving at maximum speed. It will be interesting to see what range consumers can achieve in real-world scenarios with some spirited driving.

Watts to Freedom is the ultimate performance mode

The GMC Hummer EV puts all of its 1000-hp to work with Watts to Freedom mode. According to Road and Track, the special performance mode allows the electric pickup truck to reach 60 mph in about 3 seconds.

WTF mode is more than just a glorified launch control. Aside from prepping the Hummer EVs massive battery pack, Road and Track report that it also lowers the suspension by about two inches. WTF mode’s party trick, however, is that it will play sounds via its Bose speakers to heighten the drama of it all.

Once the brake pedal is release and the launch is engaged, the system develops its entire estimated 11,500 lb-ft of torque and rockets the massive pickup truck. Although specific weight figures haven’t been published, judging by pictures alone reveals this is no Lotus Elise, making WTF mode all the more impressive.

As mentioned earlier, the first version of the Hummer EV available is the six-figure Edition 1. As of writing, WTF mode is not available in any of the lower trim levels planned for future release.

What other cool features does it have?

The GMC Hummer EV is an off-roading giant. It also gets some other off-road focused features such as Crawl Mode. In short, Crab Mode utilizes a clever four-wheel-steering system and points all of its wheels diagonally in the same direction. The result is that the massive EV can crawl almost sideways like a crab can to avoid obstacles and provide even further maneuverability.

In terms of daily drivability, the Hummer EV will feature Cadillac’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system. This integrated system will allow the electric pickup truck to follow lanes and change lanes on the highway. Super Cruise can also handle overtaking and even some off-ramps. Given that GM’s main semi-autonomous driving system, it should improve dramatically over the next few years, giving GMC’s newest EV even greater capabilities.

Expect the first batch of Hummer EV’s to arrive toward the end of 2021, with the lower-trim models arriving later between 2022 and 2024.
