Toyota has always been known for manufacturing some of the most reliable, fuel-efficient, and reasonably priced vehicles. However, the term “reasonably priced” is relative, since $50,000 might sound like a lot to you, but it could be a drop in the bucket for someone else. Fortunately, Toyota also prices its vehicles accordingly so that anyone from almost any income level can find themselves sitting in a brand-new model.

And while most of us are probably used to looking at the lower end of the price scale when perusing Toyota vehicles, this made us wonder how far the scale swings in the other direction. Case in point, if the CH-R the most affordable SUV in the brand’s line up, then which one is the most expensive?

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser

Take one look at Toyota’s website and you’ll quickly realize that the Land Cruiser is not only the most expensive SUV, but it’s also the most expensive model the brand makes. After discovering this fact, your second thought will probably be something like, “They still make the Land Cruiser?” Yes, they do and it’s better than it ever was.

Now in its eighth generation, the Toyota Land Cruiser provides an upscale, off-road-ready package that’s not a far departure from its Lexus LX570 cousin. In fact, aside from the exterior aesthetic differences between the two SUVs, you would be hard-pressed to tell a difference between them, at least from the inside.

What’s so special about the Land Cruiser?

If you can afford the $85,515 starting price, then shopping for a Land Cruiser is as easy as can be. There are only two trim choices: Land Cruiser or the Heritage Edition. And considering that the feature set is virtually the same for both trim levels, they are both very well-equipped.

Every Land Cruiser comes standard with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, a bevy of off-road features, and Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of driver-assist features which includes, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

But what you’re really paying for is inside and underneath the SUV. On the inside, the Land Cruiser comes with a leather interior, heated and ventilated seats, four-zone climate control, and a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s hooked up to a 14-speaker JBL sound system. And underneath the car, there are 8.9 inches of ground clearance, an abundance of skidplates, and a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that adjust to the terrain underneath it both on and off the road.

What’s so great about the Heritage Edition?

The Heritage Edition adds about $2,000 to the bottom line and adds on a set of bronze 18-inch BBS wheels, a Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack, and bronze contrast interior stitching to match the wheels. Also note that the Heritage Edition comes standard as a five-seat SUV, but for an extra $1,400, a third row can be added. But if you want a rear-seat entertainment system, then you’ll have to go with the regular Land Cruiser.

Is the Land Cruiser worth the money?

If you have a large family and are able to make use of the Land Cruiser’s off-road prowess and its 8,100-pound towing capacity more than twice a year, then we would say that it’s well worth the price of entry. However, if you just want something to get around in with some sense of luxurious style and comfort, then you’re probably better off with a less-expensive model like the Highlander, which is half the price.
