What Motorcycle Does Trinity Ride in ‘The Matrix?’
The Matrix movie series seems constructed of iconic images: Neo dodging bullets, Morpheus offering a choice of two pills, and Trinity kicking butt on a sports bike. But what motorcycle does Trinity ride in the Matrix series? Carrie-Ann Moss first threw a leg over a motorcycle in 1999’s The Matrix, then again during set pieces in 2003’s Matrix Reloaded and 2021’s Matrix Resurrections. Her bikes are three different brands, though she appears to prefer Ducatis.
Trinity rides a Triumph Speed Triple in 1999’s ‘The Matrix’
The first Matrix scene featuring Carrie-Ann Moss on a motorcycle is blink-and-you’ll-miss-it brief. During 1999’s The Matrix, villain Agent Smith captures Thomas “Neo” Anderson (Keanu Reeves). Smith and his henchmen arrest Anderson at work and drag him to their car out front. On the street, Trinity is watching astride a motorcycle. She realizes agent Smith noticing her and rides away.
According to IMCDB, the motorcycle in question is a Triumph Speed Triple. Triumph is one of Hollywood’s favorite motorcycles, ridden by Marlon Brando in The Wild One and Steve McQueen in The Great Escape. This year’s No Time To Die even features agent 007 on a Triumph Scrambler. But The Matrix would be the last film in the series featuring Trinity on a Triumph.
Trinity rides a MV Augusta F4 and a 1999 Ducati 996 in ‘The Matrix Reloaded’
The first sequel to The Matrix started with a bang. 2003’s Matrix Reloaded opened with Trinity riding a motorcycle off a roof. She aims the bike like a missile, then lands catlike while it destroys a guardhouse. In this dramatic first scene, Carrie Ann-Moss is riding an MV Augusta F4. This race-track-ready superbike was one of the first models by a relatively small Italian manufacturer.
Later, during Matrix Reloaded, Trinity takes part in a jaw-dropping highway chase. At one point, she hops aboard a transport truck and steals a sportsbike. Then she races down the interstate. She even rides opposite traffic, weaving between oncoming cars. This is by far the most famous Matrix motorcycle: Trinity’s Ducati 996.
During an interview, Keanu Reeves said he owns one of the motorcycles Carrie Ann-Moss and the stunt team used to film this scene. But his motorcycle is as dark green Ducati 998. The motorcycle used for closeup shots is clearly badged as a 996. Therefore, it is likely that the filmmakers used the more powerful 998 only for high speed scenes.
Trinity rides a modified Ducati Scrambler 1100 Pro in ‘The Matrix Resurrections’
The upcoming Matrix Resurrections film promises many reunions. A resurrected Neo will be reunited with new versions of classic characters, including Trinity. In addition, Trinity ends up back on a motorcycle.
The filmmakers shot a major action sequence on the streets of San Francisco. Fans took photos of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss riding through the set on a motorcycle. Ducati fans quickly recognized the bike as a Scrambler 1100. Then the manufacturer weighed in.
Ducati first reminded Matrix fans of its integral role in the franchise, namely the Reloaded chase. Then, it revealed that Trinity and Trinity will be riding a “modified” Scrambler Ducati. The company is writing the bikes name as the “Ducati Scrambler X.”
