What the Heck Is a New Edge Mustang?
The Ford Mustang has cruised American streets for nearly 60 years. In that time, the pony car evolved from a simple coupe and convertible into a sharpened GT car with a library of engines. Before the S550 and S197 generation cars we see so often, the SN-95 New Edge Ford Mustang blasted around boulevards. So, what the heck is a New Edge Mustang, and what makes it so special?
What is the New Edge Mustang called?
The term New Edge Mustang refers to the last SN-95 pony cars from the fourth generation of Ford Mustang. Specifically, the New Edge cars reigned from 1999 to 2004, a five-year tenure. The late SN-95 cars are characterized by a set of aggressively squinted headlights that taper into a diminutive grille with the left-oriented Mustang logo situated in the middle. Moreover, the cars maintained the quintessential tri-bar taillights and, depending on the trim, an aggressive hood scoop.
However, the SN-95 models also hosted several special edition models. For instance, the 2003 SVT Cobra Terminator incorporated a more sinister fascia and a 390-horsepower supercharged 4.6L V8. Also, the late SN-95 offered the first Bullitt homage, which incorporated the movie-inspired subtlety and Dark Highland Green paintwork.
What engines did Ford offer in the New Edge Mustang?
Ford offered many engines in the New Edge Ford Mustang. For instance, the non-V8 models packed a 3.8L “Essex” V6 from 1999 to late 2004. Moreover, the GT and Bullitt models packed a 4.6L SOHC mill. The later model performers, the Mach 1 and SVT Cobra Terminator, swapped the SOHC for a DOHC with the same displacement. Of course, the Terminator pushed power figures up with the help of an Eaton M112 supercharger.
Finally, the utterly savage 2000 SVT Cobra R took the SN-95 to race-ready heights with a 385-horsepower 5.4L V8 and an assortment of track components like a fuel cell and Tremec T-56 manual transmission.
How much horsepower does a New Edge Mustang make?
The 3.8L Essex V6s in the base model Ford Mustangs started life with around 190 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. However, American Muscle says that figure bumped up to 193 ponies and 225 lb-ft of torque in 2001. The SOHC 4.6L V8 produced 260 horsepower in the GT and 265 horsepower in the Bullitt. Also, the 4.6 DOHC in the Mach 1 produced 305 horsepower and 390 with the Terminator’s supercharger.
How much does a New Edge Mustang cost?
Depending on the model year and trim, a late SN-95 model New Edge Ford Mustang could cost as little as $2,800 with average mileage. However, special editions might demand more of a premium. For instance, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) says that a 2003 SVT Cobra Terminator with around 50,000 miles could cost $27,000.
Before the New Edge Mustangs, the early SN-95s featured softer curves and a less aggressive aesthetic. Also, the S197 pony cars that followed the New Edge Mustangs completely changed the model’s styling, adopting a retro-inspired style instead of the SN-95’s 1990s and early 2000s appearance.
