What’s a Ford Ranger ‘Stormtrak’ and Will U.S. Get It?
Elsewhere, the new 2024 Ford Ranger has arrived, and Ford keeps releasing special edition versions, like this latest. The Ranger Stormtrak is yet, another “Trak,” along the lines of the recently revealed Wildtrak. The Stormtrak is sort of a Wildtrak-lite. We’ll tell you why.
Will the Ranger Stormtrak be available in the U.S.?
So if you’re salivating about when the 2024 Ranger will finally arrive here, this will only make things worse. The revealed Stormtrak is ready for Thailand. Yes, Thailand gets its own special edition Ranger. If you know about Australia’s Ranger Wildtrak, this is a more fully-optioned version of that, but with less beef.
Design-wise, the Stormtrak is almost identical to the Wildtrak X. But it boasts so unique highlights like the auxiliary LED fascia lights, black “Ranger” on the tailgate, and new 20-inch alloy wheels. There is also a diagonal graphic on the rear quarters, red accents sprinkled about, and especially the practical rack system in the bed.
What’s the difference between the Wildtrak and Stormtrak?
So visually, there are distinctions. But underneath that isn’t the case. Missing from the Stormtrak are the upgraded suspension, off-road tires, skid plate protection, and premium technology. So there’s a little of this and less of that. This is in no way saying the Wildtrak is better or worse, just a different truck for different markets.
And you see the difference inside. Race Red stitching on the seats with “Stormtrak” on the dash and seats. Leather abounds, with Miko suede found on inserts.
What about safety and driver-assist features?
A 12-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control, E-shifter, and an electric handbrake are all part of the Stormtrak cabin. As you would expect, there are plenty of both safety and driver-assist features. This includes a 360-degree camera.
With diesel power being popular outside of the U.S., the Stormtrak is motivated by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. It cranks out 201 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. All Rangers are backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission. In Thailand, the base price is $36,755. Moving up to four-wheel drive gooses up the price to $40,680.
When can you order your own 2024 Ford Ranger?
All of this sets up the U.S. for the debut of the 2024 Ranger. It begins production at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant next month. This is the same plant that manufactures the Bronco and is blamed for interruptions to Bronco production.
Order banks will open on May 26, 2023. The base price for a Ranger in XL trim is $29,000. This gets you a two-wheel drive truck with a smaller SuperCab body. But we expect that most of the early production will be for fully loaded examples. However, ordering a V6-powered Ranger puts your truck’s production into Q4. That translates to delivery times between 11 and 13 months from a May 26 order.
