What’s So Great About the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS?
The AMG performance division has had its hand in many Mercedes-Benz products. For the 2022 model year, it spent time with the German automaker’s flagship electric vehicle, the EQS sedan. Now, as you may know, whenever the AMG division gets its hands on a model, you can expect more performance and more exclusivity. Fortunately, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS does not disappoint.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS?
For the unaware, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS is the high-performance version of the brand’s halo all-electric sedan. As if the EQS isn’t impressive on its own – it is. For starters, the base EQS 450+ can get up to 350 miles of range, 329 hp, and it can get up to 60 mph from a standstill in only 5.9 seconds.
That’s pretty good for a large electric sedan that weighs almost as much as a Toyota Tundra. It may not have Tesla Model S-like performance, but it’s still impressive. If you want more, the Mercedes-AMG EQS is what you seek.
The AMG performance division beefed up the car’s drivetrain with a pair of performance-oriented electric motors between each axle to give the car an AWD system. Working together, the pair of motors put out 658 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque, which can be increased temporarily to 751 and 752, respectively, via the Race Start Mode. But you have to get the AMG Dynamic Plus Package for that.
Driving the Mercedes-AMG EQS feels other-worldly
That power is no joke in real-world driving situations. We recently tested the Mercedes-AMG EQS, and the car moves smoothly and silently under normal throttle. However, if you dig into the accelerator for even a second, the car jolts with an alarming force as everyone in the cabin gets pushed back from the enormous amount of torque.
The all-wheel drive system is serious stuff too. The 22-inch AMG wheels wrapped in summer tires allow the EQS to stick well in the turns, even when you’re burying the right pedal. Flip the car into Sport + mode, and the experience becomes even more dramatic. The car’s speakers emit a loud Star Trek-like tractor-beam sound the deeper you get into the pedal travel.
It’s cool enough to impress any unsuspecting passenger and make them feel like they’re being beamed into warp speed. The acceleration never gets old.
What makes the AMG EQS so special?
Aside from the powerful powertrain, what makes this car so special is that it’s the first all-electric car that AMG had a hand in. It can also squeeze around 277 miles out of a single charge, which doesn’t sound too impressive. But if you drive this car when it’s not too hot or too cold, you could get closer to 300 miles.
Yes, the Tesla Model S is rated higher and delivers similar performance figures. But the AMG EQS offers a far more robust interior with hand-stitched leather seats, wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto technology, and a massive 56-inch Hyperscreen that does nearly everything but cook breakfast for you.
Needless to say, the Mercedes-AMG EQS is an impressive all-electric sedan with exotic car-like performance. It provides a one-of-a-kind ride that you wouldn’t expect out of a large car. If you can get behind the wheel of one, you surely won’t forget the experience – Star Trek sounds and all.
