What’s Making the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Fly Off the Lot?
It looks like Mitsubishi has a sales success on its hands with the new all-new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. The Mitsubishi Outlander SUV sales are up 218.2%, year-over-year, according to Mitsubishi. The Outlander is Mitsubishi’s flagship and the company sold 13,065 in the first quarter of the year. It’s outselling many other midsize SUVs, maybe that’s because of it’s long line of standard features that include a third row.
But, said the company, “Demand continued to outstrip supply,” for the Outlander. In a recent news release it didn’t give any details about its vehicle production levels, but many manufacturers are seeing a supply crunch because of the unavailability of the chips needed to control various vehicle systems.
What are the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander trim levels?
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander starts at $25,795 for the ES model in two-wheel-drive trim, making it one of the least-expensive SUVs with a third-row. The ES can be upgraded with 20-inch wheels and a connected safety for an additional $1,000.
The 2022 Outlander can be dressed up quite a bit more with the SE or SE Launch Edition packages that get you adaptive cruise control, parking sensor, wireless charging and a 12.3-inch digital driver display. There’s also an additional tech package that adds Amazon Echo 3, a BOSE premium sound system, and a power panoramic roof. SE Packages start at $28,845 or $31,145 for the SE with the tech package.
The SEL is the everything package, and includes power seats, leather seats, heated rear seats, three-zone climate control and more. The SEL Touring Package, the most expensive at $34,645, adds semi-analine leather seats, a heated steering wheel, sunshades and more.
Any Outlander trim can be turned into an all-wheel-drive for about $2,000.
Is the Outlander reliable?
Mitsubishi partnered with Nissan to make the Outlander and the Nissan Rogue, which are basically the same vehicle.
So far, the 2022 Outlander has seen three recalls. On was for a fuel pump failure on some Outlanders, one was for missed welds on the center pillar, and one was for seat belts. Dealers are fixing the vehicles.
Overall, however, Consumer Reports expects he 2022 Outlander to have a predicted reliability rating of a 2 out of 5. While the 2022 version is still too new to report on, Consumer Reports makes its predictions on the Nissan Rogue, which shares the Mitsubishi’s powertrain and other components. While it didn’t score particularly well on the road test, taking nearly 10 seconds to hit 60 miles per hour, it scored high on the “usability” score and for its long list of standard accessories.
While the Outlander does come with a third-row standard, it’s a tight one. Third row passengers have only 51 inches of shoulder room and 26.5 inches of leg room, or about 10 less than other three-row SUVs. That way back, then, is just for the kids.

A PHEV Outlander is coming, too
Mitsubishi has announced plans for a plug in electric hybrid version of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander to come to the U.S. The PHEV will start at $36,995 and include a fast-charging system, as well as four-wheel-drive. Mitsubishi says the new PHEV will have 370 miles of range, with a 2.4-liter four cylinder paired with a twin-motor EV.
