Previously only offered on the Toyota Tacoma, for 2022, the TRD Sport name comes to the 4Runner. This model adds a few features that can’t be had anywhere else in the lineup. Features range from exterior cosmetics to off-road capability accessories. For instance, it comes with adaptive dampers to improve body control.

Additionally, the 4Runner TRD Sport comes with 20-inch wheels and a hood scoop. These accentuate the look of the vehicle and help it to stand out from its lesser siblings. Inside, it gains faux-leather upholstery, and Sport badges are displayed throughout.

Higher price, higher beams

For the 2022 model year, every Toyota 4Runner now comes with LED high beams. Previous models did not come with these lights, and they were delivered just in time for the off-road capable models. High beams are never more important than when driving away from the road in dangerous areas at night. Due to changes like this, the vehicle also got a bit more expensive.

The cost of the 4Runner is up to a starting price of $38,020 for 2022. The previous model year started at just $36,765, which means that for 2022, it’s $1,255 more expensive. Price jumps like this aren’t out of the ordinary from one year to the next for any vehicle. Although we do wish it meant Toyota added something other than LED high beams across the entire lineup.

What engine does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner have?

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner comes with only one engine option, and it’s a 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes up to 270 horsepower. The 4Runner will reach 60 mph from 0 in 7.6 seconds, according to CarAndDriver. Both rear and four-wheel drive are available on all trim levels.

It comes with an excellent towing capacity for an SUV in its class at 5,000 pounds. That beats the competition like the Ford Edge but loses out to more powerful options like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 4Runner’s fuel economy doesn’t come near the top of the charts, either. It will get an average city gas mileage of 16 and can manage 19 on the highway.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is one of the more capable SUV options in the midsize segment. Though it isn’t the most powerful, it is as reliable as you’d expect a Toyota to be. The new TRD Pro trim and the other off-road amenities make it an excellent option for driving on rugged terrain. Other than the new trim, the only new feature across all models is the LED high beams. While these are very useful and a welcomed addition, they’re probably not worth the extra $1,255 you’ll be paying for a base model this year.
