The GMC Canyon isn’t the most popular pickup, so it’s often overlooked by those in the market for a new truck. It’s a smaller pickup truck with three different engines, good towing capability, and a wide variety of trims and configurations to choose from. It also gets better gas mileage than many of its rivals.

A new model is priced a little cheaper than similar small pickups, and many critics think that the Canyon’s performance matches that of a full-size truck. Here’s what’s new on the 2020 model, according to Car and Driver.

A remote locking tailgate

The Canyon’s tailgate can now be locked with the push of a button as the driver walks away from the truck. The Canyon is also available with an EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate, which makes it easier to load and unload cargo from the bed. A bed step on both sides of the rear bumper is standard on all models.

The cargo box comes in two sizes: 5-foot-2 inches and 6-foot-2 inches. With the best available engine and towing package, you can haul up to 1,605 pounds in the bed. There are four tie-down hooks inside, with another 13 outlets if you need to install more hooks.

A new paint color

All of the paint colors for 2019 have returned for this year, along with a new shade called Carbon Black Metallic. It’s a premium color, meaning you’ll have to pay extra. Some colors are only available on certain trims. There are also four different interior colors to choose from.

Some trims also have special appearance packages. The All-Terrain model includes large all-terrain tires, a spray-on bedliner, and weather-proof floor liners. The SLE’s Chrome package comes with nice chrome accents on the door handles, tailgate handle, and mirror caps. If you want more black accents, you can spring for the Elevation Edition package, available for all models.

No manual transmission

Fans of the old-school gearbox are out of luck this year: the Canyon’s six-speed manual is no longer available. Transmission options are now either a six- or eight-speed automatic. The six-speed automatic is standard, with a four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine that produces 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque.

For even more power, you can get the V6 3.6-liter engine with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. This one is paired with the eight-speed transmission. In addition to smooth shifts, you’ll also be able to unlock the Canyon’s full towing capacity of 7,000 pounds. With the base engine, you can only tow up to 3,500 pounds.

New features for the All-Terrain trim

The All-Terrain model is one of the priciest versions of the Canyon, but it’s equipped with many useful features for off-roading. It comes with a locking rear differential, hill descent control, an enhanced suspension, and four-wheel drive. However, GMC has cut back on some of the bed and cab options for this model.

As of 2020, you can no longer get an extended-cab Canyon All-Terrain with all-wheel-drive. Leather interior has also been discontinued for this trim. However, it did receive two new available safety features: lane departure and forward collision warning.

What else has changed?

The longer bed configuration with rear-wheel-drive has been cut, but either four-wheel or all-wheel drive is still available. The aux input has also been removed from all models of the Canyon. The Tire Fill Alert function is now standard for each trim, which will help drivers keep track of their tire pressure. While the Canyon has been criticized for its lack of standard safety features, it’s still a good truck overall.
