Back in the day, all trucks were two-door trucks and your only options were a long bed, or a longer bed. Then, we started seeing extended cabs with little back doors, then bigger cabs with four full-sized doors, and even mega cabs with limousine-like legroom. Every manufacturer makes several versions of truck cabs to fit a variety of uses, but what’s the best truck cab size for you?

The standard cab, the basic two door

The standard cab truck is what a lot of think of when we think of a truck. In general, the standard cab or basic cab is a two-door three-seater configuration. Ram, and others, however, do offer a hard console in the middle that limits seating in the standard cab to just two people.  Because of its short length, you can usually find a long bed option listed with the standard cab trucks. Unfortunately, the standard cab is getting rare among big trucks. It’s still an option, though, on Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado.

King Cab, or Extended Cab, or SuperCab

In the 1980s trucks with little jump seats in the back and tiny clamshell doors in back became popular. They made sense as trucks became vehicles for daily driving, not just farm work. Nissan calls its version the King Cab, if you’re a GM fan, you’ll know it as a Double or Extended Cab, Ram calls it the Quad Cab. The extended cab makes room for more truck storage. These trucks either have small jump seats in back for two, or a small bench for three people with short legs.

On the Tundra, the Double Cab comes with a 6.5-foot bed. It’s available in SR, SR5 and Limited trims, and you can order up to an 8.1-foot bed. On the Tacoma, it’s called the Access Cab, and it can be ordered with a 7-foot bed. On trucks from the Big Three American manufacturers, the bag doors are all a little bit shorter than the full four-door trucks. At Ford, the SuperCab, which is available on the F-150 and Ranger, opens wide to allow back seat passengers to hop into the two jump seats in the back.

The Regular Cab now has four doors

Most of us will probably get the regular cab truck. The regular cab, for everything from the smallest Ford Maverick to the largest heavy-duty truck, looks about the same from each brand. Ford fans know it as the SuperCrew, while Ram and Chevy call it a Crew Cab, and Toyota calls it a CrewMAx. The differences are, generally, in width with the Super Duty or Heavy Duty trucks from each manufacturer getting a bit more width.

The Crew Cab can come in five or six-seat versions.

How much bigger is the Ram Mega Cab?

Only Ram offers a Mega Cab which has four full-sized doors and adds 11 inches to the overall length of a Heavy Duty Ram truck. This thing is huge, with an additional six cubic feet of storage behind the back seats. Ohh, and did we mention those back seats have the room to recline? The Mega Cab is a can only be ordered on HD, 4×4, trucks with eh 6-foot, four-inch, bed.
