What’s the Difference Between the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV?
Chevy is going all-in small with electric crossovers and the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are two of its most popular. They have nearly the same name and look similar, and they’re both clearly a branding exercise in creating the Bolt nameplate for Chevy. But these two electric EV crossovers are vastly different EVs. What’s the difference between the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV?
Chevy wants you to forget about the Volt, and think Bolt
The Bolt name is the latest iteration of Chevy’s electric push that started with the Volt series several years ago. The Volt was one of the first plug-in hybrids you could buy, but instead of the gas engine powering the vehicle, it would only turn on to charge the battery. With the Bolt line, Chevy has gone all-in on EVs. Both Bolts are 100% electric.
The basics of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV
Both EV crossovers seat five and have the same 200-horsepower permanent-magnet single-motor driveline. They both have independent front suspension, and a torsion beam rear suspension. They both have available large 10.2-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, as well as fast charging capabilities and some driver assistance aids. Essentially, the EUV is the SUV, while the EV is the subcompact.
The BOLT EV is the economy version
The Bolt EV’s less expensive price means it doesn’t offer as many features, or space, as the larger EUV. In base 1LT trim, you get cloth seats, a 65kWh battery pack, and Chevy’s 3 Plus infotainment system. It also comes standard with Chevy’s Safety Assist. Leather and adaptive cruise control are options.
The EV, though, is a lot smaller than the EUV. It has a maximum of 57 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded, and 93 cubic feet of passenger volume. Its maximum range is 259 miles, which is more than the EUV, but that’s mainly because it’s lighter but uses the same powertrain.
The Bolt EUV is bigger, and nicer, than the EV
The Bolt EUV is a lot more friendly, and has more options, especially in the top Premier trim. It offers one-pedal driving, fast charging, leather and more. Though it’s six inches longer than the EV, that doesn’t translate to more cargo ability. In fact, they hold virtually the same amount of stuff and have interior dimensions that are almost identical.
The EUV’s range is 2247 miles on a full charge. We like the sleeker Redline version that adds some sporty touches, like trim pieces, that make it look lower and leaner than the EV.
How much should I pay for a Chevy Bolt?
The Bolt EUV is one of the cheapest EVs and starts at $28,195 for 2023 and $32,695 for the top line Premier. If that seems less expensive than last year, you’re right. GM lost some tax credits so it lowered the price by $6,300 for 2023. It lowered the price of the Bolt EV, too, and it now starts at $26,595 for the 1LT and $29,795 for the 2LT. Because of the price cuts, some owners got a refund on a new Bolt.
Is the Chevy Bolt reliable?
Both Bolts are the subject of a major recall. General Motors recalled the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV and is replacing the battery packs after a major fire risk. According to the Detroit Free Press the recall affects 141,000 vehicles and once the repair is made will warranty the vehicle for eight years or 100,00 miles. The new versions come with improved battery packs and software.
