It’s hard to believe that Mitsubishi has used the Mirage name for cars since 1978. Since then, the Mirage name has been synonymous with frugal, affordable, sedans and hatchbacks. Today, Mitsubishi again makes a sedan and a hatchback version of the Mirage, the Mirage G4 and the regular Mirage. The big difference is that the 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 has a trunk, while the Mirage doesn’t. But, are those the only differences?

The 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 has a trunk

Both the Mirage and the Mirage G4 feature Mitsubishi’s new styling language inspired by the Outlander on the front of the cars in the form of twin-spars on the grille. The face of the G4 is slightly sleeker than the stubby face of the Mirage.  But, beyond that, they are both nearly identical.

The big difference between the two is that the G4 has a trunk. In that trunk, you can fit 12.6 cubic feet of stuff, which is about just a tiny bit less than a 2023 Honda Civic. But, the Mirage has slightly more room at 17.6 cubic feet, thanks to its wide-open cabin.

Is the 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage a reliable car?

Mitsubishi has had a long time to perfect the Mirage. It launched the current sixth-generation Mirage in 2012. It received a major facelift in 2015, and then another minor styling revision in 2020. At J.D. Power, the last version rated was the 2020 car. The 2020 Mirage receives a score of 82 of 100 for quality and reliability. However, the driving experience came in at a 75 of 100, which puts it in the average category. The car’s overall disappointing score of 76 is brought down by its resale score of just 59 of 100.

While a 76 doesn’t sound stupendous, J.D. Power ranks it as the sixth-best small car. But, the cars aren’t well reviewed.

Is the Mirage fuel efficient

Both Mirage variants will be nice to your wallet. The 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 gets 35 MPG in city driving, and 41 MPG on the highway. The 2023 Mirage gets slightly better figures: 36 MPG in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.

Cars in the sub-$20,000 range don’t often come with the kinds of safety features the 2023 Mirage G4 and Mirage do. They both have seven airbags and several standard driver’s safety aids. It does earn middling scores from safety rating agencies.

The 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 and Mirage comes with forward collision mitigation, which alerts you to dangers in the road and if you don’t react, can automatically hit the brakes. It also has lane departure warning, and automatic headlights.

How much are the 2023 Mitsubishi Mirages?

A 2023 Mirage G4 starts at $17,245, while the 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage starts at $16,245. The most expensive Mirage G4 will set you back $18,945, and it comes with different wheels and a large 7.0-inch touchscreen and heated seats. The SE version of the Mirage comes similarly equipped and starts at $18,145.
