The all-new Ford Bronco Sport is getting ready to hit the streets for 2021 officially. Since its unveiling, comparisons to the Bronco Sport have been nonstop. Not only will this new crossover compete with models like the Jeep Renegade, but it also counters its family member, the Ford Escape. What are the similarities and differences between the Bronco Sport and the Escape?
Bronco Sport and Escape styling cues
Right off the bat, the 2021 Bronco Sport and the 2020 Escape offer entirely different flavors in regards to style. The original Escaped gained prominence for its casual, rugged style. Now, the Escape has been completely redesigned and has a very different vibe for 2020. The Escape is now sleek and shapely, and its higher rooflines make it look even more refined.
Oppositely, the Bronco Sport tributes the original Bronco’s vintage fashion. Ford says the Bronco Sport’s flashy grille and blocky shape demonstrate the brand’s originality. If you’re looking for a model that stands out in a crowd, the Bronco Sport would be the one to pick.

Performance capabilities
The Bronco Sport and the Escape are considered twins when it comes to performance since they share the same platform. Both models come standard with a 181-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. Although, the standard engine on the Escape has garnered mixed reviews from critics. For instance, Consumer Reports says the base model is just fine for driving around the city or on the highway.
On the other hand, Car and Driver says the base engine makes the Escape feel “grumbly and unrefined.” The available 250-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder on the Escape gets better reviews because of its power and liveliness. The Bronco Sport will also feature this same engine on the higher trim levels.
Both the Bronco Sport and the Escape come with a host of different driving modes. All-wheel drive is available on each model too. However, Ford optimized the system on the Bronco Sport for those who want off-roading capabilities.
The Escape isn’t designed for off-roading at all. It’s also worth mentioning that the Escape is available as a hybrid. There are no immediate plans for a hybridized Bronco Sport, but we are expecting one down the line.
Interior features
The Bronco Sport and the Escape can both seat up to five people. As far as interior design goes, they are entirely different here, just like they are on the outside. The Escape features a handsome car cabin, but it’s heavily adorned with plastic finishings.
With the Bronco Sport, you get a trendier design that’s complete with a safari glass roof. The Bronco Sport also features more practical interior elements like a rubberized cargo floor. Ford says this crossover will offer the most space in its class
Both the Bronco Sport and the Escape are available with many desirable in-car electronics. However, more features come standard on the Bronco Sport, such as an 8-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. These features are upgrades on the Escape. On another note, both crossovers come standard with many advanced features.
Final thoughts
The Bronco Sport and the Escape are very similar in performance, but they answer two different needs. For unique styling and off-road capability, go with the Bronco Sport. If you’re looking for a relaxed city ride, the Escape is probably the better fit for you.
