VinFast is a Vietnamese electric vehicle start-up that has many gearheads excited. The brand has showcased its upcoming vehicles at various auto shows, and audiences seem to be impressed. When and how can Americans get their hands on a VinFast electric SUV?

When can you get a VinFast SUV in the USA?

VinFast recently showcased two electric SUVs at CES 2023: the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7. Americans can reserve the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7 in March 2023. Deliveries of reserved electric SUVs should get to their new owners toward the end of the calendar year. So, you can order a VinFast electric SUV as soon as Spring, and it should arrive in the Winter of 2023.

VinFast was founded back in 2017 in Hanoi, Vietnam, by Pham Nhat Vuong. VinFast claims that its factories can produce hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles per year. It’s unclear what impact VinFast will have on the market, but it’s clearly a company to watch as more electric vehicle nameplates surface internationally.

VinFast VF 6 specs

The VinFast VF 6 is the company’s subcompact SUV model. The VF 6 is about 167 inches long. That’s roughly the length of a Hyundai Kona. Its base model, the VF 6 Eco makes 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s more horses than the Kona but less power than sportier subcompact SUVs like the Mazda CX-30. It has a 248-mile estimated driving range.

The VinFast VF 6 Plus final trim level makes 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. It has 237 miles of driving range. The VinFast VF 6 has enough power to keep things interesting and enough driving range to be capable.

VinFast VF 7 specs

The VinFast VF 7 is the brand’s small SUV. It’s about 179 inches long. That’s a few inches shy of the Toyota RAV4’s length.

The VF 7 Eco base trim makes 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. The small SUV gets 280 miles of driving range. The VinFast VF 7 Plus makes 348 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. It gets 268 miles of driving range.

Should you get a VinFast electric SUV?

VinFast, like the electric vehicle market itself, is in its infancy. New electric vehicle automakers like Rivian have struggled to get vehicles delivered and produce affordable models. VinFast is in a different boat in terms of affordability. Kelley Blue Book claims that the VF 6 will start at around $30K. The VF 7 should start at around $37,000.

If VinFast electric SUVs prove to be reliable, the EVs could sell well internationally. However, since VinFast is such a new company, it will take time for American consumers to trust the brand. It’s too early to recommend getting a VinFast electric SUV yet, but the company is certainly making plenty of noise on the electric vehicle scene.
