General Motors will officially debut the new refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 during a media preview event on October 21st. This follows the reveal from back in September of the Sierra’s GM counterpart, the Chevrolet Silverado. The new Silverado received new updates that will likely be mostly the same for the Sierra 1500. The Sierra 1500 is nearly the same truck as the Silverado, simply rebadged for General Motors’ other brand.

There are two things we can base the refreshed Sierra 1500 on. One is the spy photos GM Authority has already taken of the new truck, the other is the Silverado reveal. Spy photos reveal new exterior styling and fascia, not unlike that of the new Silverado. It also features a new interior including a larger infotainment screen, a brand new center stack configuration, and slim, horizontal air vents. The top Denali trim is expected to offer a unique interior compared to the rest of the Sierra lineup.

The new Chevy Silverado introduced an enhanced version of its 2.7-liter I4 L3B engine, and the Sierra 1500 will likely do the same. The new engine allows the Silverado to produce 20 percent more torque than the previous model year. The other engine option, the 3.0-liter I6 LM2 Duramax turbodiesel, is expected to get a boost as well. GM Authority estimates the towing capacity will rise from 9,300 pounds to 13,300 pounds. It also confirmed that the Brownstone Metallic and Dark Sky Metallic paint colors are no longer available on the regular cab body configurations and Limited configurations, respectively.

When will the refreshed Sierra 1500 be available?

We expect an official production and availability date to be revealed simultaneously with the refresh on October 21st. It’s highly likely the truck will not be available for purchase until at least Spring of 2022. The Spring release is becoming more common since it’s giving automakers more time to work on the massive semiconductor chip shortage production issue. There is a chance, however, that GMC dealers begin taking reservations on the 2022 Sierra 1500 starting just after the October 21st debut.

How much will the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 cost?

Official pricing is not yet available for the 2022 model year, but we can make a very close estimate of what the new Sierra 1500 will cost. Firstly, the Sierra 2500 HD starts at just $36,700. We can count on the 1500 non-heavy duty version to start much lower than that. Secondly, the 2021 Sierra 1500 currently starts at $30,100. Since the truck is receiving some upgrades, including to the base engine, we’d wager the price rises a bit. Somewhere in the $31,000 to $33,000 range will likely be the starting point.

The refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is the next big reveal for pickup trucks. There are plenty of news-worthy events happening in the truck segment this year into next. Could GMC be the next big automaker to step into the electric truck market? With the wild success of the Ford F-150 Lightning ahead of its release, we wouldn’t be surprised if something was announced. To confirm more details about the new Sierra 1500, we’ll have to wait until the official debut on October 21, 2021.
