The coronavirus outbreak may have stalled production in some manufacturing plants, but that doesn’t mean the hype for new SUVs is dead. A lot of cool new vehicles are still slated to be released in the near future. The fully redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban are still on track for a mid-year release. Another exciting upcoming SUV is the 2021 Genesis GV80.

We’ve already seen impressive cars from the automaker like the G70 and G90 sedans. The GV80 will be the brand’s first SUV, and drivers are already excited to get behind the wheel. Here’s what we know about the GV80 so far.

Luxurious and powerful

MotorTrend already posted photos of the GV80’s interior a few months back. Its seats are a unique combination of green and brown leather, both comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. A 14.5-inch touchscreen is also included, but drivers can also use a physical knob equipped with handwriting recognition.

Two powertrains are available for the Genesis GV80. The standard choice is a turbo 2.5-liter inline-4 rated at 300 hp. Higher trims receive a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that can make up to 375 hp. Both of these are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The EPA hasn’t released any gas mileage estimates for the GV80 yet.

Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive will be available for this SUV. The all-wheel-drive models have drive mode settings for snow, sand, and mud, which are great for some light off-roading. Models with the V6 engine will also be equipped with adaptive dampers that can recognize upcoming bumps via a camera.

Car and Driver recently test-drove a GV80 in South Korea. This one was equipped with a diesel engine, which we sadly won’t get in the States. The reviewers were very impressed with the Genesis GV80’s ride quality. It’s sporty and quiet, and it feels very composed over all types of terrain.

How much will it cost?

The starting price for a 2021 Genesis GV80 will be around $49,925. Models with the upgraded 3.5-liter V6 engine start at $60,175. Drivers who want a fully-loaded Prestige edition will have to pay $71,795.

The best-equipped Genesis GV80 is still not as expensive as a top-of-the-line Mercedes GLE-Class or a BMW X5. The standard trim is also cheaper than rivals like the Lincoln Aviator and the Audi Q7. For many drivers, the base trim should have plenty of features to satisfy their needs.

How safe is the GV80?

The base Genesis GV80 comes with many safety features. These include cruise control, forward-collision warning, driver distraction mitigation, lane assistance, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. Pricier trims get a few extra features like a surround-view camera system and remote parking.

The vehicle hasn’t been given an official safety rating by the IIHS or NHTSA. However, given how safe the automaker’s other models have been, we can assume it will be high. All three vehicles made it onto the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ list. The G70 and G80 sedans also have high reliability ratings from Consumer Reports.

When will the Genesis GV80 be released?

The 2021 Genesis GV80 is still on track for a stateside summer release date. As of two weeks ago, 10,000 drivers had already pre-ordered the new SUV. Even with the high demand, the president of Genesis doesn’t anticipate any inventory shortages.

It’s not hard to see why the 2021 Genesis GV80 is already so popular. It looks stylish from the inside and out, comes loaded with plentiful technology, and it has a capable engine. Only time will tell if it can live up to its sedan predecessors, but the future looks promising.
