Where is the Chevy Silverado Off-Roading Truck?

Is the Chevy Silverado good for off-roading? 

Don’t count the Chevy Silverado 1500 out for off-roading and desert racing just yet. Chevy entered the Best in Desert off-roading racing program to take on rivals such as the Ford Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.

However, it joined in 2019 with plans to build a Chevy Silverado in 2020 that has been modified to tackle the off-road courses. We haven’t exactly heard an update since then, but based on the Chevy Colorado Z2R Bison, we have confidence in Chevrolet for building off-roading trucks.

Other rumors from 2019 suggested that a Chevy Colorado ZRX off-roading truck was in the works. The new full-sized off-roader is supposed to have a dynamic spool suspension valve, locking differentials, a robust diesel engine, and more. But it’s so late in the year, that we could see this truck built for 2022 instead. 

Is the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss worth buying? 

Currently, the 2020 Chevy Silverado Trail Boss is the beefiest full-sized off-roading truck that Chevrolet has to offer. The Trail Boss comes with a 2” factory installed lift kit, Ranchero shocks, skid plates, an automatic locking rear differential, hill descent control, 33” mud tires, and more. 

For a more confident or intimidating look, the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss has a black grille, black bumpers, bright red tow hooks, and the Trail Boss badge on honor on the rear fenders. This way, you can show off what you’re driving. 

When tested on some trails, the Chevy Trail Boss provided a smooth ride on beginner trails. The suspension handled lighter bumps and dips with ease. But the ride on the pavement is incredibly bouncy.

But later, the mud tries proved not to have the best grip, and the off-roading angles were too small to climb over rocks. The skid plates ground against obstacles before the truck got stuck, and the drivers called it a day. 

Chevy Silverado Trail Boss features 

The Chevy Silverado LT Trail Boss starts around $35k, with a double cab, making it cheaper than the Ford Raptor that starts around $55k. You can also choose the Trail Boss with four different cab sizes.

The base engine that comes with the Chevy Silverado Trail Boss is the 5.3-liter EcoTech 3 V8 engine that pumps out 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 9,000 lb. You can also upgrade to the 6.2-liter V8 engine for 422 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. 

That engine would put this truck close to the 450 horsepower provided by the Ford Raptor. However, it seems like if you want an off-roading Chevy, then you should go with the Chevy Colorado Z2R Bison instead, which has proven itself as an excellent mid-sized off-roading truck
