Cars usually get one or two useful features for each new model year. It could be anything from new safety features, engines or transmissions, and even standard smartphone integration. Plenty of cars also got complete redesigns for the 2020 model year like the Ford Explorer and Toyota Supra.

With new engines come different fuel economy scores. For budget-conscious shoppers, the amount they spend at the pump is a crucial factor in deciding which car to buy. Which 2020 cars get the best gas mileage? The folks at Carfax compiled a list of the best options.

The 2020 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has always been a consumer favorite thanks to its great performance in a small package. It also gets great gas mileage. The sedan with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and the continuously variable transmission gets a combined score of 33 MPG.

The trim with the best gas mileage is the EX sedan, which gets a combined score of 37 MPG. The Civic comes in two other body styles: the coupe and the hatchback. The standard hatchback gets 34 MPG, a little better than the base sedan. The hatchback was also restyled for this year and got some much-needed infotainment upgrades.

The 2020 Kia Rio

The Rio only has one available engine, a four-cylinder capable of 130 hp. It comes with standard front-wheel drive and an automatic six-speed transmission. It gets a combined score of 36 MPG.

Most of the vehicles on Carfax’s list are reported to have poor acceleration, but the Kia Rio is an exception. It has nimble handling that you typically don’t find on smaller cars, making it the best pick for thrill-seekers. However, the cabin doesn’t have a lot of standard technology offerings. 

Bluetooth is included, but you’ll have to purchase a higher trim for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It also doesn’t have many advanced safety features, even in higher trims. 

The Hyundai Elantra

For the 2020 model year, the Hyundai Elantra got a standard CVT paired with a four-cylinder engine. It gets a combined score of 35 mpg. The Eco model performs slightly better with a combined 36 MPG but costs a bit more than the standard powertrain.

Both versions give passengers a comfortable ride, with a steady suspension and smooth handling. It also has three driving mode settings for tackling different types of terrain. The Elantra has new standard safety features for 2020, like lane-keeping assistance, climate control, and emergency braking. However, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher trim for standard smartphone integration.

The new Kia Forte

The Forte doesn’t have the most powerful base engine, but that’s the one that gets the best fuel economy. With the available CVT, the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder gets a combined score of 35 MPG. 

The upscale interior is also an incredible value for the price. Smartphone integration is standard and easily accessible through a large 8-inch touchscreen. Even though the Kia Forte is a small car, its cabin is spacious and there’s plenty of space in the trunk. It also has more standard safety features than its rivals.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage

This car is available in either a sedan or a hatchback, with five different trim levels. The hatchback with the CVT gets the best gas mileage, up to a combined 39 MPG. However, it’s paired with a very weak engine.

The 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine only produces 78 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque. Consumer Reports found the engine to be noisy and sluggish. The suspension in the hatchback is also bumpy on uneven pavement. This combined with the cheap-feeling interior creates a very uncomfortable ride. The Mirage may be first-class in gas mileage, but it falls terribly short in every other category.
