Class of 2021: Which 2022 Pickup Trucks Are Redesigned or Brand New?
There are only a few wholly redesigned 2022 pickup trucks for the new model year. As we move on from 2021, there will be a few new faces in the pickup truck segment. These include complete redesigns as well as brand new models introduced. Either way, the truck segment is looking fresh-faced for 2022. Let’s see what’s new for the upcoming model year.
Redesigned 2022 pickup truck – Nissan Frontier
For 2022, the Nissan Frontier receives a complete redesign for the first time since 2005. The second generation ran for 15 years in total, and the pickup truck was getting desperate for a refresh. For 2022, the exterior design changes to make it more bulky, rugged, and modern. The exterior isn’t the only thing that looks a lot better.
On the interior, the Frontier is now more comfortable. Adding higher quality materials and an impressive new infotainment interface improves the interior of the truck. The standard 3.8-liter V6 engine powers it to tow up to 6,720 pounds when properly equipped. The 310 horsepower redesigned pickup truck starts at an affordable price of just $27,840.
Redesigned 2022 pickup truck – Toyota Tundra
The full-size truck from Toyota receives a complete redesign for the new model year. The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a new frame, a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs, and a brand new engine lineup. The Tundra has lost its V8 engine option but goes in a more environmentally friendly direction. The standard engine is a 379 horsepower twin-turbocharged V6, but there’s also a hybrid option available.
The hybrid powertrain features an electric motor paired with the twin-turbo V6 to create 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. The official fuel economy ratings for the new powertrain have not become available yet. The Tundra can only tow up to 12,000 pounds, which puts it at the segment’s bottom. Comparatively, the F-150 can tow 14,000 pounds, is the same size, and offers a hybrid option.
There are two brand new 2022 Ford pickup trucks
The Ford Lightning is the fully-electric pickup truck from the American automaker coming for the 2022 model year. It’s shockingly affordable, starting at $39,974, and has everything you’d expect from a Ford truck. The Lightning is capable in ways other trucks can’t be, like the ability to power your house for a few days.
The Ford Maverick is a hybrid compact pickup truck that customers can’t wait to get their hands on. It’s received so many preorders; Ford’s production is struggling to keep up. The Maverick is as capable as other trucks its size but is amazingly affordable. The base model starts at just $19,999, but even the top trim Lariat doesn’t exceed $30,000.
There’s a new 2022 Hummer EV pickup truck
You might’ve heard about the Hummer returning to the market as a fully electric vehicle. Did you know there’s also a pickup truck variant of the same Hummer EV? The massive truck looks like a blown-up Jeep Gladiator with its short bed and wide body. It uses three completely electric motors, and its estimated output is 1,000 horsepower. The truck has sold out, but jumping on a waitlist could get you access to one as early as the Fall of 2022.
Hyundai is entering the segment
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is the automaker’s new compact pickup truck that seats five and is surprisingly excellent. It shares a lot with the Tucson SUV and has an impressive 5,000-pound towing capacity. The Santa Cruz uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine to get its 21 city, 27 highway miles per gallon, excellent for a truck. However, Hyundai’s closest competitor is the Ford Maverick, which is getting 42 city mpg.
The 2022 Rivian R1T, the next big thing
The Rivian R1T is probably the most exciting new addition to pickup trucks for the 2022 model year. Though the R1T is far too expensive to become overly popular, it’ll quickly become a dream car for many. It’s fully electric and offers loads of features for capability and off-road driving. Early testing has already revealed that it’s capable of dominating some severe off-road driving.
The R1T comes with four electric motors and enough ground clearance that drivers won’t need to worry about bottoming out during off-road adventures. The electric battery can drive up to 316 miles on a single charge, but a long-range version is in the works. It’s luxurious and filled with amenities you’ve never thought of, but the price shows it. The Rivian R1T starts at $67,500 and can be purchased right now.
The new model year looks like it will be a great one for truck enthusiasts. According to J.D. Power, only a few 2022 pickup trucks are getting wholly redesigned, but plenty of brand new ones are entering the market for the first time. It’s an exciting time as we get to see many of these electric and non-electric trucks launches and see how the new models will sell. We already know the demand for fuel economy is there since the Maverick has over 150,000 reservations Ford is trying to fill.
