According to Car and Driver, the best trim to buy is the second tier, Inscription model. It comes with a 316 horsepower turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It also adds a significant number of features those looking for a luxury SUV will value. Some of them include 20-inch wheels, a digital gauge cluster, lane-keeping assist, nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats with massage, and a Harman Kardon audio system.

However, another major publication, MotorTrend, disagrees. We tend to lean more in favor of MT’s choice, the base Momentum trim level. Not only is it significantly less expensive than the XC90 Inscription, but it’s also very well equipped. For nearly $15,000 less, owners get four-zone climate control, a digital gauge display, adaptive cruise control, and a moonroof.

On top of tons of interior comfort features, the standard model comes with a high-performance 10-speaker audio system, Sensus navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and more. Momentum models come with a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 250 horsepower. Lastly, it gets 23 combined mpg, which is better than the next trim’s 22 mpg with only 19 city.
