Which 2023 SUV Has the Highest Towing Capacity?
Are you hunting for an SUV with a high towing capacity? Every automaker that builds a full-size pickup truck also offers a truck-based, full-frame SUV. From the Nissan Armada to the Chevrolet Suburban, you can configure any of these SUV to two 8,000+ pounds. The three SUVs with the highest towing capacity are the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and the Stellantis/Jeep Wagoneer.
The 2023 Ford Expedition has a 9,300 pound towing capacity
Ford’s Expedition SUV is based on its F-150 truck chassis. A 2WD Ford Expedition with the $795 heavy-duty trailering package features a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds. If you upgrade to the long-wheelbase Expedition Max or the 4WD model, this will reduce your towing capacity, slightly–according to Kelley Blue Book.
One of the amazing things about the Ford Expedition’s towing capacity is it achieves this number with no V8 engine option. Every Ford Expedition has some version of the turbocharged 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6. On most models it makes 470 lb-ft of torque, but the Platinum trim gets 480 lb-ft and the Timberline and Stealth trims get 510 lb-ft.
The Expedition also features Ford’s ten-speed automatic transmission. This transmissions eighth, ninth, and tenth gears are all overdrives. Ford engineered this transmission to improve your fuel efficiency while towing.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia can tow 9,520 pounds
Toyota’s Sequoia is all-new for the 2023 model year. This full-size SUV actually shares so many components with the new Toyota Tundra, that Toyota moved its assembly to the Tundra’s San Antonio Texas factory.
A 2WD Toyota Sequoia with the trailering/towhook package has an impressive 9,520 pound towing capacity. One of the things that makes the new Sequoia so mighty is that Toyota is building every last one with its premium Tundra engine: the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. This drivetrain includes a 3.44-liter twin-tubrocharged V6, ten speed Aisin transmission, and an electric motor/generator sandwiched between the two.
The latest Sequoia also ditched its independent rear suspension and returned to a solid rear axle, this time riding on coil springs. The result is a very stable vehicle with smooth acceleration, even when hauling a heavy trailer.
The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer boasts a 10,000 pound towing capacity
The class-leader is clear: Stellantis’ revived Jeep Wagoneer, based on the Ram truck chassis, can tow an unprecedented 10,000 pounds. Like the other SUVs on this list, you’ll need to order a Wagoneer with a $1,495 Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package to get the maximum tow rating. This includes a better rear axle ratio, engine cooling, electronic limited slip differential, and trailer brake controller. The capable Wagoneer also features a rear camera setting that helps you hook up a trailer.
With the Wagoneer, bigger isn’t always better. If you upgraded to the Grand Wagoneer, Stellantis upgrades the 5.7-liter V8 to a 6.4 liter V8 (also known as the 392). But the heavier, more luxurious SUV only has a 9,850 pound towing capacity.
If you order the long wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L, you can order one of the first vehicles with the new twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder “Hurricane” engine. This next-generation Stellantis engine makes an incredible 510 horsepower and 500 lb-ft. It bumps the Grand Wagoneer L’s towing capacity to 9,750 pounds.
