Could your new electric truck tell people how old you are? It turns out that the older you are, the less likely you are to want a Tesla Cybertruck. But, if you’re older you’ll prefer the Ford F-150 Lightning. When rated against each other, which electric truck would you pick? Would you contradict your millennial peers and get a new Ram 1500 Revolution, or a Silverado EV, or a Cybertruck because that’s what the kids like?

Which electric truck would you pick?

Of the five upcoming, or available, electric trucks from Ford, Toyota, Tesla, Chevy or Ram, which would you pick? A new survey by Autolist may predict which electric truck you want based on your age. While every age group prefers the Ford Lighting or the highly anticipated Toyota Tacoma EV truck, there were several significant differences. The survey asked potential buyers which truck they would want: the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Toyota Tacoma EV, the Tesla Cybertruck, the Chevy Silverado EV or the Ram 1500 Revolution.

Yes, the survey didn’t include every electric truck you can buy, or that you should be able to buy. Notably, the Rivian R1T and the Lordstown Endurance were missing. Also, though many are expecting Toyota to release a new electric Tacoma for 2024 or 2025, Toyota has yet to confirm that it’s launching an electric truck. Though the Silverado EV and the Ram 1500 Revolution were included in the survey, every age group preferred other brands. However, we have yet to see the new Ram Revolution, as it’s set to debut in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Baby Boomers don’t like the Cybertruck

Fully 32% of Gen Z electric truck buyers would prefer the Tesla Cybertruck. Though production is, finally, beginning and most expect the Cybertruck to arrive as a 2024 model. But it seems that Gen Z, generally defined as those born from 1996 to 2015, seem to prefer the iconoclastic lines of the Cybertruck to the more traditional lines of the Ford. The Cybertruck should, when we start seeing them on the road, look like nothing else on the road.

Millennials prefer the Tacoma EV – even though it doesn’t exist yet

Toyota has not confirmed that it will build a Tacoma electric truck. Many, though, are expecting Toyota to jump on the bandwagon and release a new EV version of the mid-size Tacoma. The Tacoma in some ways is the truck of millennials because it’s a bit smaller than full-sized trucks, but offers most of the capability. It also has garnered a hip reputation as an off-roader, a durable truck, and its styling probably speaks to millennials more than a traditional truck’s.

Fully 21% of millennials prefer the Toyota. However, tied for second place were the Cybertruck and the F-150 Lightning.

Gen X and baby boomers prefer the Ford F-150 lighting.

Those of us who were born before 1978 should prefer the traditional truck look of the Ford F-150 Lighting. Traditionalists do love the Ford because it doesn’t try, like the Cybertruck, to look like an electric spaceship. Instead, 31% of baby boomers and  25% of Gen Xers preferred the Lightning. It looks like an F-150, does F-150 things like haul and tow, and is F-150 sized.   Though 25% of boomers also said they’d prefer the Toyota, only 17% of Gen Xers said they would.
