Cars are stereotyped like many other things in life, but Ford’s vehicles are never stereotyped as being the safest cars on the road. That doesn’t mean that Ford’s vehicles can’t be safe, however. In fact, Ford’s SUVs have won several safety awards. Here are the safest Ford SUVs on the market today.

2019 Ford Edge

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently awarded its Top Safety Pick designation to Ford for the 2019 Ford Edge. This was the first Top Safety Pick selection that the IIHS awarded Ford as a brand, which means that the 2019 Edge was deemed safer than Ford’s more popular models, such as the Ford F-150 or the Ford Focus.

In crash tests for the 2019 Edge, the IIHS gave it a “Good” rating, which is the highest grade, in every category. The only safety categories where the Ford Edge didn’t get top marks were headlights and child safety anchors. The headlight options were given either an “Acceptable” grade, which is the second highest grade, or a “Poor” grade, which is the worst grade possible. 

The child safety anchor on the Ford Edge was given an “Acceptable” rating in terms of its ease of use. To make up for that, Ford offers a lot of standard safety features, such as blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention.

Other safe Ford SUVs

Lincoln is owned by Ford, so that’s why the Lincoln Corsair is considered a Ford SUV as well. Both the 2020 Ford Escape and the 2020 Lincoln Corsair were named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS a few weeks after the Edge. While these two SUVs are different in many ways, in terms of safety, they’re very similar, according to the IIHS. 

For instance, both the 2020 Escape and the 2020 Corsair were given a “Good” grade in every single crash test category by the IIHS. Both of these SUVs were also given “Good” grades in the front crash prevention and the child safety anchor categories by the IIHS. On top of that, both of these SUVs have the same standard safety features, which include blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention.

The main safety difference between the Ford Escape and the Lincoln Corsair, according to the IIHS, was in their headlights. The 2020 Escape was given “Acceptable” and “Marginal” grades, which is the second-to-worst grade possible, depending which headlight is equipped. The 2020 Corsair was given “Acceptable” and “Poor” grades for its headlight options.

Don’t explore the 2020 Ford Explorer

A few weeks after the Ford Escape and the Lincoln Corsair received their safety awards, the IIHS announced that the Ford Explorer and the Lincoln Aviator failed to win any safety awards. This isn’t particularly shocking for the Ford Explorer, especially in its earlier model years, as it’s known to be a terrible SUV in general.

While the 2020 Explorer and the 2020 Aviator failed to win a safety award, they didn’t perform too terribly in the IIHS’s crash tests. In particular, both received an “Acceptable” grade on the driver-side small overlap crash test. In every other crash test category, both received “Good” grades.

Like other Ford SUVs, both the Ford Explorer and the Lincoln Aviator either got “Acceptable” or “Marginal” grades on categories such as headlights or child safety anchor’s ease of use. Both of these midsize SUVs also have the same standard safety features that the 2020 Escape and 2020 Edge have. So, while both of them failed to win the Top Safety Pick award, they aren’t the least safe SUVs in the world.
