There are a lot of Jeep models to choose from. There’s the Renegade, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Gladiator, and more. When making your decision on which Jeep to pursue, it can be difficult to get started, but one important factor to consider is safety.

Which Jeep Is The Safest? 

Since the first Jeeps were introduced as civilian vehicles that could be totally customized to go anywhere, it wasn’t long before people realized they weren’t very safe. But in the time since World War II, Jeep has been able to greatly improve safety and reduce roll-over risks. 

Some of the major safety improvements include sturdier roll bars, padded roll cages, airbags, antilock brakes, reinforced steel high strength pillars, wide-spaced frame rails, and more.

1. The Jeep Cherokee 

Currently, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is one of the safest models to choose from. In 2019, it won the Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institue for High Way Safety. This is the second-highest award that SUVs can receive from this organization. 

However, SUVs must have an optional front crash safety prevention system and optional headlights to qualify. They also have to be built after April 2019. 

During collision tests, the Jeep Cherokee earned advanced and superior ratings for driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, roof, side, and head restraint strength. The Cherokee also successfully avoided collisions at 12 and 25 MPH. 

The Jeep Cherokee’s front crash safety ratings rank up there with the Suburu Forester and RAV4 2019 models. This is also the highest safety designation earned by Jeep since the 2017 Compass. 

2. The Jeep Renegade 

The Jeep Renegade may provide more spunk than safety, as it received acceptable crash ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Many test results for side crashes, rear crashes, and roof strength did receive good ratings, but the Renegade only received an acceptable score for the small overlap front passenger crash rating.

But on that note, it’s important to mention that the Jeep Renegade did receive a superior rating for front crash prevention. 

Optional safety features for the Renegade include front crash monitoring, lane assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-path detection. 

3. The Jeep Compass 

The Jeep Compass also has pretty good safety scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Where the Renegade scored acceptable, the Compass received a good score for small overlap front passenger safety.

It also scored well for roof strength, side-impact safety, and rear crash protection. It also scored Superior for front crash prevention results. So, while not being as safe as the Cherokee, the Compass is considered to be slightly safer than the Renegade. 

4. The Jeep Wrangler 

Unfortunately, the Jeep Wrangler is not receiving good safety ratings. While it’s test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety haven’t been released, other safety tests found head and leg injuries with pedestrian impact. 

The crash dummies involved had a rough day as the Wrangler failed to provide good protection of the chest and neck for the driver and front passenger. The Wrangler also lacks automated front collision prevention. 

However, the Wrangler did receive a good rating for side barrier protection, whiplash protection, and has a low rollover risk.

Until more testing is performed on the Wrangler and Gladiator, currently the Jeep Cherokee has the highest safety rankings among Jeep models. The Compass and Renegade are also safer Jeep options to consider.
