Known for its reliable, reasonably priced vehicles, Mazda is a popular choice for anyone looking for a good SUV. There are currently four SUVs in Mazda’s lineup: the CX-30, the CX-5, the CX-9, and the CX-3.

Which gets the worst gas mileage of the bunch according to U.S. News?. If you’re torn between your options, here’s what you should know about each of these Mazda SUVs.

The CX-3 is the most fuel efficient Mazda SUV

Getting an estimated 29 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway, the CX-3 is currently the most fuel-efficient Mazda SUV in the automaker’s lineup, and is one of the more efficient subcompact SUVs on the market. With a starting price of $20,640, the CX-3 is also slightly more affordable than many of its rivals. 

It features a four-cylinder engine that makes 148 hp, which is low but still powerful enough for daily driving. U.S. News does note that the engine can be somewhat noisy if you try to accelerate at high speeds.

With its responsive steering, the CX-3 handles incredibly well. U.S. News praises the strong brakes and the well-controlled body, but does note that this SUV’s suspension can be a bit stiff at times. The CX-3 also has a below average predicted reliability rating from J.D. Power.

The excellent safety ratings of the Mazda CX-30

This Mazda SUV stands out thanks to its stellar safety ratings. It was named a 2020 Top Safety Pick by IIHS, earning the highest possible rating in all of its crash tests. This SUV also earned the top score for its collision prevention systems. It is worth noting, however, that the IIHS gave the CX-30 the lowest possible rating of Poor for its optional headlights.

This SUV comes with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety suite, which includes features such as lane departure warning and pedestrian detection. It also comes standard with adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic high-beams.

The CX-30 features a four-cylinder engine that makes 186 hp. It gets an estimated 25 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway, and has an MSRP of $21,900.

The comfort and efficiency of the Mazda CX-5

U.S. News praises the cabin of this Mazda SUV, calling it “one of the nicest interiors in the class.” It has incredibly comfortable seating and modern styling, with an extensive range of driver assistance features that includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

While it isn’t the most fuel efficient option in Mazda’s SUV lineup, the CX-5 does boast some stellar numbers for the compact SUV class. It gets an estimated 25 miles per gallon in the city and 31 miles per gallon on the highway.

This SUV also comes with a four-cylinder engine that makes 187 hp, and it is one of the few vehicles in this class to offer a turbodiesel option.

The CX-9 in Mazda’s least fuel-efficient SUV

With an upscale cabin and a comfortable, powerful ride, this Mazda SUV is ideal for drivers who like a little pep. It comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 227 hp, and U.S. News praises its rapid acceleration, firm suspension, and responsive steering.

Given the bigger engine and overall size of the SUV, it makes sense that the CX-9 is Mazda’s least fuel-efficient SUV. The CX-9 offers an estimated 20-22 mpg in the city and 26-28 mpg on the highway. To be fair, these aren’t horrible numbers considering some of the CX-9’s rivals.

Mazda continually produces vehicles that are stylish, affordable, and fun to drive, and its SUVs are no exception. Whether you opt for the fuel-efficient CX-3 or one of the other options, it’s difficult to go wrong with any of the vehicles in this lineup.
