Fussing about gas prices and weather is about as human as it gets. However, these days, both the weather and gas prices have gotten a little more extreme than ever before. As anyone who doesn’t have someone else fuel their cars up will know, gas prices are breaking records left and right in the U.S. with seemingly no end in sight. It’s for this reason that our journey from NYC to Birmingham, AL, for Thanksgiving was done in 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid

What is the gas mileage for the 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid?

With gas prices butting up against the $4-mark in NYC, my wife and I knew we needed something fuel-pump-friendly for our 2k-mile journey down south and back. In fact, we nearly covered 3k miles after it was all said and done.

Our 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid loaner came in the Touring, AWD version, meaning it had all the bells and whistles that Honda saw fit to bestow upon it. The EPA rates the CR-V as getting 40 mpg in town and 35 mpg on the highway in this trim and spec. While these are fairly common figures for hybrid sedans and compact cars, these are killer numbers for anything resembling an AWD SUV or crossover.

While the EPA ratings are probably possible if you never get in a hurry, we averaged 30.1 mpg throughout our week-long, 3k-mile journey. Given the CR-V’s comfort, reliability, and size, these numbers didn’t disappoint, even though they are considerably lower than the EPA rating.

Is the Honda CR-V a comfortable car?

Again, Honda isn’t really known for its luxury and flashy style. In fact, even the top-trim Touring AWD model seemed somewhat plain but plenty nice. After nearly two full days on the highway, my 6’5, 220-lb body remained fairly comfortable, outside of a little knee and butt pain, but with that much seat time, what else could you expect.

The cabin felt light and airy, as well as plenty spacious for the entirety of the trip. The Apple CarPlay worked flawlessly, the sound system decent, the heated seats and steering wheel did their thing quickly, and the CR-V’s interior overall never felt too cramped or oppressive. Car and Driver also found the CR-V perfectly adequate, even if it is a bit plain.

The ride was phenomenal. For a crossover starting at a smidge over $37,000, the cabin was quiet and the ride plenty smooth and controlled. The only reminder of its budget price tag was the whinny sound of the engine any time my foot found its way to the floor. Other than that, the Honda CR-V was a road trip machine made to munch miles like a pro.

Is the 2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid a good car?

The 2022 Honda CR-V is a hard car to beat if you look at it objectively. The CR-V is affordable, reliable, good-looking, comfortable, and ultimately a perfect everyday driver. However, if someone is looking for a little thrill from their car, the CR-V will fall short.

Simply put, it can be a bit boring. The powertrain is a bit sluggish, the CVT and its lack of gear shifts are obvious and distracting, and the cornering and braking leave plenty to be desired. That being said, these hardly count as serious critiques for the CR-V because that isn’t what Honda has promised.

The 2022 Honda CR-V was consistently exactly what it promised to be; a reliable and fuel-efficient crossover that gave its driver everything it had to also be comfortable and nice to look at. Honda’s continued ability to provide exactly the car we need (even if it’s not always the car we want) is deeply respectable and valuable.
