Oh no, not again. The Jeep Wrangler tipped over during Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash testing again. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler received updates to prevent it from rolling, but apparently, they didn’t help. 

Does the 2022 Jeep Wrangler have a high rollover risk? 

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is more likely to flip than other options. It received a score of three out of five for its rollover risk from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It has a rollover risk of 29.70 percent. 

Plus, the 2022 Wrangler tipped over during IIHS crash simulations. During the driver-side small overlap crash test, the Wrangler rolled on its side. The Wrangler tipped over back in 2019, too, and Stellantis had plenty of time to correct this issue. 

However, modifications made to the structure failed to keep the Wrangler upright. But on a positive note, the safety cage surrounding the crash dummy held its structure well. Also, the restraints effectively controlled the dummy’s movements. 

On a not-so-positive note, the test indicated a significant risk of injury to the driver’s left leg and foot. On top of that, the combination head and torso airbag failed to deploy. 

This resulted in a ‘Marginal’ rating for the driver-side small overlap protection, which is one rating above the worst possible score. 

How safe is the Jeep Wrangler? 

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler isn’t exactly the safest option, but it’s not the deadliest vehicle either. It seems to have average safety ratings, and it passes the crash tests well enough to be on the road. 

Stellantis explained that with a conservative estimate, Jeep Wrangler models account for over 105 billion miles on the road, and it’s unaware of any field testing that corresponds with the IIHS test results. 

The IIHS shared that partial rollover risks are dangerous because they increase the risk of an occupant being partially or fully ejected from the vehicle. 

The NHSTA found that people killed in rollover accidents increased by 13 percent in 2020 to 7,107, accounting for about 18 percent of traffic deaths. 

In most of the other IIHS tests, the Wrangler scored a ‘Good’ rating, which is the highest score possible. Rear passenger head protection is lacking in the side impact test. 

The seatbelt reminders received a marginal score because the alerts aren’t initiated fast enough, and the reminders aren’t loud enough.  

What safety features come with the 2022 Jeep Wrangler? 

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler doesn’t come with many standard safety feature options, which is a little strange. Rivals like the Ford Bronco at least have automatic highlights and parking sensors. 

With the Wrangler, you can opt for available blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and ad parking sensors. Forward Collison mitigation and a forward-facing camera are options available on higher trim levels. 

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler will arrive with a mid-cycle refresh. Typically vehicles don’t receive structure upgrades for the mid-cycle refresh, but perhaps the Wrangle will become a little more stable. 

It would be good to include more standard safety features to increase the value of such an expensive ride too. We will keep an eye out for the latest updates.
