Why Are Teardrop Campers So Popular?
Do you want to experience the great outdoors without having to buy a massive RV camper? Then something smaller, like a teardrop camper might suit your needs. These towable campers have a much smaller footprint than their family-sized RV siblings and technically have less to offer, so why are they so popular?
Teardrop campers are small, but configurable
If you have never heard of them, teardrop campers are aptly named for their “teardrop” shape in that they are round on one end and then tapered on the other. Some of the smallest campers can measure in at 72-inches wide and 139-inches long, while larger teardrops can measure out to 21-feet in length. It really depends on what you want inside your teardrop camper, as it can either be outfitted with just a bed or multiple beds and a bathroom.
You can even customize a teardrop camper on the outside as well. Some custom teardrops have wooden exteriors, retro paint designs, and custom color schemes while others can look like your run-of-the-mill white camper. You can even get your teardrop camper color-matched to the vehicle that tows it if you want.
Teardrop campers can fit just about any budget
Since you can buy a pre-built teardrop camper, custom-build your own, or try your luck on the used market, there isn’t really a set price. That’s great news for anyone looking to get into RV camping as you can technically find a teardrop to fit your budget. According to Vistabule, some of the low-end teardrops can cost between $5,000 to $10,000, while the mid-tier ones can cost around $10,000 to $15,000. If you want to stretch your budget and get a top-tier teardrop, then you can expect to $16,000 and up. And at that level, the sky is the limit.
Teardrop campers are very towable
Whether you ride a motorcycle or drive a large truck, you can find a teardrop camper to tow behind. Of course, if you plan to tow one with a bike, then don’t expect it to be very big. For example, one of the most common brands of teardrop trailers is Little Guy Trailers, which currently has a trio of teardrops that can work for almost any vehicle.
The smallest “My Pod” trailer is ultra-lightweight as it has a dry weight of 630 pounds and a tongue weight of 110. On the end of the spectrum, the Little Guy Max features a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and a dining area, but has a starting weight of 3,000 pounds. So it’s better suited for being towed by a larger vehicle.
Are teardrop campers worth buying?
If you love camping and want to bring all of the amenities from home, including your own car, then a teardrop camper is one of the best options for you. They don’t take up that much room when you need to store them and they are easy to tow when it’s time to go. On top of it all, you won’t spend as much on fuel, either, as towing a teardrop will likely use up less fuel than if you were buy a much larger RV camper.
