Wait for a second, isn’t the 2021 Honda Ridgeline a first-place truck? Well, it tends to rank well among critics, at least. But drivers and critics might disagree because we found some information that puts the Honda Ridgeline in last place. 

The Honda Ridgeline is last in sales 

While looking at a report of the best-selling mid-size pickup trucks in the third quarter of 2021, we were shocked to discover that the 2021 Honda Ridgeline is in last place. The Toyota Tacoma, Jeep Gladiator, Ford Ranger, and more all moved more units. 

According to Auto Evolution, the Ridgeline only movies 6,502 models in Q3 2020. This is a 24.5 percent decrease from the 8,607 units that were sold in Q3 2020. Its closest competition was the Nissan Frontier that sold 11,667 trucks. Also, no one can catch the Toyota Tacoma with its 61,305 units. 

What’s wrong with the Ridgeline? 

So, this left us wondering why the Honda Ridgeline is struggling. Why is no one buying it? On several lists, like the Best Mid-Size trucks of 2021 by Edmunds, the 2021 Ridgeline is the top option. 

You might be able to take the ongoing semi-conductor chip shortage into consideration. Many auto manufacturers are facing delays and limited inventory due to supply issues. Also, the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has presented challenges. 

But one thing we’re looking at is the price. The 2021 Ridgeline has an MSRP of $36,490. That makes it the most expensive mid-size truck. The Jeep Gladiator starts at about $34,960, the Ford Ranger begins at around $24,820, and the Toyota Tacoma starts at $26,400. 

We know that a lot of value is included with the Ridgeline’s price. For example, it does include all-wheel drive. However, it may not be as well equipped for more traditional truck stuff as rivals are. 

The Ridgeline comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. This is pretty fast for a mid-size truck. However, it can only tow up to 5,000 lbs. 

Meanwhile, the Jeep Gladiator can to up to 7,650 lbs, making it a more attractive option for hauling campers, boats, or trailers. Also, the Ridgeline lacks underbody clearance, low-range gearing, and wheel articulation to keep up with rivals while off-roading. 

Why do critics like the Ridgeline? 

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline has a unibody design and independent rear suspension for a smooth and sporty ride. Because it’s a car-based truck, it has unrivaled handling and steering. Plus, this truck is spacious and comfortable. 

You’ll find plenty of cubbies along with a massive center console for storing gear. There’s also flat storage beneath the rear seats, and child seats are easy to install. The bed can hold four-foot-wide sheets without perching on top of the wheel wells too. 

There are plenty of great things to say about the comfortable and versatile Ridgeline. But it also comes with a higher price tag and weaker capabilities. Other trucks that can do a little more are currently in the spotlight.
