Ram is a popular American automaker that’s well-known for its full-sized pickup trucks, and as such, the company’s seen a lot of success in recent years. That said, the full-size pickup truck segment is very competitive, and it’s usually a close race between Ram trucks, the Ford F-Series, and the Chevy Silverado. Currently though, Ram is losing ground to Chevy and Ford in terms of full-size truck sales, and it’s not entirely clear why that’s the case.

Here’s where Ram stands compared to Chevy and Ford

GoodCarBadCar recently updated the sales numbers for cars in the American auto market, and it’s clear that full-size trucks are still dominating. Overall, the best-selling model hasn’t changed, but second and third place continues to be a close race. The Ford F-Series is still the best-selling truck in America. Not only that, but it’s the best-selling vehicle overall.

In the first three months of 2023, Ford has sold just over 170,000 units of the truck. The Chevy Silverado, meanwhile, was in second place. Chevy has sold just about 127,000 units of the truck, year-to-date. In comparison, the Ram pickup truck has fallen to third place, as the automaker has only sold just around 105,000 units of the truck so far in 2023.

The next best-selling vehicle is the Tesla Model Y, which has sold about 85,000 units in the first three months of 2023. That means that there’s a roughly 20,000 unit difference between Ram and the Model Y, which isn’t that large. As such, it’s possible that Ram may fall even further in the near future.

Ram trucks sales appear to be slowing down

To be fair to Ram, its trucks have only really sold comparatively well to the Silverado and the F-Series in recent years. GoodCarBadCar has sales data dating back to 2005, and for most of the years from then to now, Ram has peaked at around 400,000 units in annual sales. In comparison, the F-Series and the Silverado were better sellers in those years.

That started to change at around 2014. Ram’s sales jumped to about 440,000 units, and sales numbers only climbed in the next few years. In that time, the F-Series was selling much better, but it was a close race between the Ram 1500 and the Silverado. In 2019 though, Ram finally overtook the Silverado in sales, as the company sold over 630,000 units compared to Chevy’s 575,000 units.

Chevy recovered its spot in 2020, but Ram retook it in 2021. However, Ram’s recent success seems to have fallen off ever since 2022. It goes without saying that the supply chain crisis likely affected Ram’s sales, but the crisis should’ve affected Chevy and Ford too.

Chevy and Ford are growing in sales, while Ram has not

In 2022, Ram sold just about 470,000 units compared to Chevy’s 520,000 units. Ford was above them both with over 650,000 units sold. As the supply chain crisis eased, sales have largely recovered.

This is likely why Chevy and Ford saw increases in sales in the first three months of 2023 compared to the same time period in 2022. Year-to-date, Ford has sold over 30,000 more trucks than in the same time period in 2022, and that translates to an increase of 21%.

Chevy has sold about 6,000 more units than last year, so its sales numbers have grown by about 5%. Ram’s sales, meanwhile, have dropped by 22,000 units compared to last year. That’s a decline of 17%. It’s difficult to know why Ram is struggling while Ford and Chevy aren’t, but it’s always possible that truck shoppers are simply choosing a Ford or a Chevy over Ram.
